Worlding Raga: 3 — Slouching with God

Last week, my wife and I watched the new Captain Marvel movie, and it struck me that it has a slightly quieter tone compared to the typical Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. This subtle shift in tone made me reflect on the character of Captain Marvel herself and her place within the MCU. It occurred to me that she is arguably the most powerful character in the universe, much like Superman in the DC universe. She possesses a level of power that transcends mortal limits, making her more like a god than a mere superhero.

The film's quieter tone is a reflection of Captain Marvel's inherent power. Unlike other MCU heroes who often find themselves in desperate battles or underestimated situations, Captain Marvel's abilities are so immense that they allow her to operate with a sense of calm authority. This power is not just about her physical strength or her ability to manipulate energy, but also about her confidence and her understanding of her own capabilities.

In the DC universe, Superman is often depicted as the quintessential "Man of Steel," embodying the concept of a superhero who is both powerful and morally unwavering. Similarly, Captain Marvel embodies a sense of god-like power and responsibility. Her journey in the MCU has shown her grappling with the weight of her power and the burden it imposes on those around her. This struggle is a common theme in stories of gods and demigods, where the power they wield often comes with a heavy cost.

The quieter tone of Captain Marvel's film can also be attributed to the character's unique perspective. As a being with god-like abilities, she is able to see the world from a different vantage point. This perspective allows her to approach problems and conflicts with a sense of detachment, which can sometimes make her seem aloof or distant to those who do not understand her true nature.

Moreover, the film's quieter tone may also be a nod to the character's complexity. Unlike some other MCU heroes who are defined by their flaws and personal struggles, Captain Marvel's power and her journey are more about self-discovery and understanding her place in the universe. This introspective aspect of her character allows for a more contemplative narrative, one that is not as reliant on action-packed sequences or high-stakes battles.

The comparison to Superman is not without its merits. Both characters are symbols of hope and justice, wielding immense power to protect the innocent and uphold the values they believe in. However, Captain Marvel's journey in the MCU has also explored themes of identity and the consequences of power in a way that is unique to her. Her story has shown her grappling with the legacy of her Kree heritage and the responsibility that comes with her abilities.

In the context of the MCU, Captain Marvel's god-like power serves as a reminder of the universe's vast scope and the diverse range of beings that inhabit it. Her presence in the MCU has expanded the narrative possibilities, allowing for stories that delve into the unknown and the cosmic. This expansion of the MCU's universe has been a significant part of its enduring appeal, as it invites audiences to explore the infinite possibilities that lie beyond the familiar confines of Earth.

In conclusion, the quieter tone of Captain Marvel's film is a reflection of her inherent power and the unique perspective it grants her. As a character who is more like a god than a mere superhero, she embodies a sense of authority and responsibility that is both awe-inspiring and daunting. Her journey within the MCU continues to explore the complexities of power and identity, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the superhero genre. As the MCU expands and introduces new characters and stories, Captain Marvel's god-like power serves as a reminder of the universe's boundless potential and the enduring allure of stories that transcend the mortal realm.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they don’t want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didn’t notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didn’t know why they’d just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place. Doors A while back, I was at Black Seed Bagel, which has a door that looks 75% like a “push” door from both sides when it’s actually a push door from the outside and
