Watch The Weather Channel like its 1999 with the official RetroCast

The Weather Channel has officially unveiled a new feature called RetroCast Now, which allows viewers to experience a throwback look to the late 1990s and early 2000s. This development comes after fans have repeatedly requested a return to the channel's classic design, and the meteorological network has listened to their pleas.

RetroCast Now offers viewers the current local weather conditions and upcoming forecasts in a nostalgic, Y2K-inspired interface that closely resembles what viewers saw on The Weather Channel during that time period. The feature even includes a relaxing smooth jazz soundtrack, adding to the overall throwback experience.

The concept of RetroCast Now is not a passing fad but rather a celebration of the nostalgia and innovation of the 1990s. In 1982, The Weather Channel introduced WeatherStar, a computer attachment known as a headend, which allowed the network to receive and send out localized weather information and potentially lifesaving alerts during severe storms. Although the visual aesthetics have evolved significantly since then, the broadcast technology remains largely similar to early incarnations.

Mark Fredo, executive creative director at The Weather Channel digital properties, explained to Popular Science that the idea for RetroCast Now came from listening to users. "In an era where on-demand weather data is at everyone's fingertips, we want to celebrate the nostalgia and the innovation of the 90's," Fredo said. "This was the moment local weather storytelling was first delivered at scale, transforming a simple forecast into a communal experience."

Inspired by this history, Fredo's team redesigned the overall look of RetroCast Now to fit today's screens, both large and small. The new feature is not just a visual homage to the past but also a way for The Weather Channel to connect with viewers on a deeper level, tapping into the sentimental value of the channel's early years.

RetroCast Now is available on both the website and app, providing users with a unique and nostalgic way to access current weather information. The smooth jazz soundtrack adds to the immersive experience, transporting viewers back to a time when weather forecasts were a simpler, more straightforward affair.

The Weather Channel's decision to introduce RetroCast Now demonstrates the network's commitment to its history and its users' desires. By incorporating elements from the channel's past, The Weather Channel is not only paying homage to its roots but also creating a new way for viewers to engage with the content they love.

In a world where technology continues to evolve rapidly, RetroCast Now offers a refreshing escape to a time when things were simpler. For many, it represents a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era, while for others, it serves as a reminder of the channel's pioneering role in weather forecasting. Regardless of the reason, RetroCast Now is a welcome addition to The Weather Channel's offerings, providing viewers with a unique and memorable experience.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

Context Engineering for Coding Agents
The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit. Powerful context engineering is becoming a huge part of the developer experience of these tools. Birgitta Böckeler explains the current state of context configuration features, using Claude Code as an example. moreтАж

What does less protein and nitrogen mean for methane?
Does feeding less protein to cows over a longer period not only reduce nitrogen losses, but also affect methane emissions? Researchers at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) investigated this in a multi-year study with dairy cows, funded by the Vereniging Diervoederonderzoek Nederland (VDN), the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN), and […] The post What does less protein and nitrogen mean for methane? appeared first on Agriland.ie .
