Uber expands its EV incentive program across the US
Uber is expanding its EV incentive program across the US. The company began testing the service in select cities last year. This is a program in which Uber offers drivers a $4,000 grant to switch from their current vehicle to an EV. These grants are available for both new and used electric vehicles, which is nice because new cars are expensive and could be out of financial reach for many Uber drivers. This program is available to Platinum and Diamond drivers who complete 100 eligible rides by December 31. These drivers can apply for the grant on the platform's website, with applications processed from April 16. The $4,000 grant isn't the only incentive on offer here. Drivers who purchase a new or used EV through the platform TrueCar can get an additional discount of $1,000. Also, Kia is partnering up with Uber to offer $1,000 off the purchase of a Niro or EV6 and $1,500 off the EV9 SUV. All of that adds up. No matter how you slice it, however, it doesn't add up to $7,500. This program exists because President Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" wiped out the federal tax credit on EVs. Data indicates that full-time Uber drivers make an average of $42,000 per year . A Kia EV9 starts at $55,000, which goes down to $49,500 with Uber's grant and Kia's discount. The math is still wonky, as I can't think of many other jobs that require workers to spend more than a full year of salary

Uber is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) incentive program across the United States, a move that follows the company's initial testing of the service in select cities last year. This program offers Uber drivers a $4,000 grant to switch from their current vehicle to an EV, a financial incentive that is particularly welcome given the high cost of new electric cars. The grants are available for both new and used electric vehicles, making it more accessible to a wider range of drivers who may not have been able to afford a new EV otherwise.
To qualify for the grant, drivers must be Platinum or Diamond status and complete 100 eligible rides by December 31. Applications for the grant can be submitted on the Uber platform's website, with the application process starting on April 16. The $4,000 grant is not the only incentive available to drivers. Those who purchase a new or used EV through the platform TrueCar can receive an additional $1,000 discount. Furthermore, Kia is partnering with Uber to offer $1,000 off the purchase of a Niro or EV6 and $1,500 off the EV9 SUV. While these combined incentives total more than $6,000, they still fall short of the $7,500 that some may have anticipated.
The introduction of this program is closely tied to the removal of the federal tax credit on EVs under President Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill." The federal tax credit had provided $4,000 with the purchase of a used EV, which Uber's policy now matches. The rideshare platform has been actively encouraging the adoption of EVs, with Uber reporting that there are more than 286,000 EVs on the app globally. The company also notes that Uber drivers are adopting EVs at a much faster rate than typical car owners in the US, Canada, and Europe.
The average full-time Uber driver makes an estimated $42,000 per year. However, purchasing an EV can be a significant investment. For example, a Kia EV9, which starts at $55,000, can be reduced to $49,500 with Uber's grant and Kia's discount. Despite these incentives, the cost of an EV can still be a substantial portion of a driver's annual income, raising questions about the financial feasibility of the transition for many.
Uber's EV incentive program aims to make the switch to electric vehicles more affordable and accessible for its drivers. While the combined incentives may not cover the entire cost of an EV, they do provide a substantial reduction in the upfront expense. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Uber to promote sustainable transportation and reduce its carbon footprint. As the program expands across the US, it remains to be seen how many drivers will take advantage of the incentives and transition to electric vehicles.
