tvOS 26 recently added two Apple TV 4K features I’ve been loving

The wait for a new Apple TV 4K continues, but Apple has been steadily enhancing the user experience with updates to tvOS 26, introducing two features that have been particularly well-received by users. These updates, while not groundbreaking, demonstrate Apple's commitment to refining its streaming platform and improving the overall viewing experience for its customers.

One of the standout features in the recent tvOS 26 updates is the improved picture-in-picture (PiP) mode. Previously, using PiP on an Apple TV 4K could be cumbersome, with limited customization options and a less-than-ideal viewing experience. The latest updates have made significant strides in addressing these issues. Now, users can easily adjust the size and position of the PiP window, allowing for a more flexible and enjoyable multitasking experience. Additionally, the new PiP mode supports a wider range of content, including popular streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, making it a valuable addition for those who enjoy watching shows or movies while doing other tasks on their Apple TV.

The second feature that has garnered praise is the enhanced Siri integration. With the latest tvOS 26 updates, Siri has become more responsive and efficient, providing users with a smoother and more intuitive way to navigate their content. Siri can now more accurately understand natural language queries, allowing users to search for shows, movies, or episodes with greater ease. Furthermore, the improved voice recognition technology has made it possible for users to control their Apple TV with more precise commands, such as adjusting the volume or changing the channel without having to pick up their remote.

These updates to tvOS 26 are a testament to Apple's ongoing efforts to refine its streaming ecosystem. While the anticipation for a new Apple TV 4K model remains high, these incremental improvements demonstrate that Apple is committed to enhancing the user experience for its existing devices. For many, these new features have transformed the way they interact with their Apple TV, making it a more versatile and enjoyable platform for streaming content.

In addition to these updates, Apple has also been working on other behind-the-scenes improvements to tvOS 26. These include optimizations for better performance and stability, as well as bug fixes that address common user complaints. While these changes may not be as visible as the new PiP mode or Siri enhancements, they contribute to a more reliable and enjoyable overall experience for users.

As the wait for a new Apple TV 4K continues, these recent updates to tvOS 26 serve as a reminder of the value that can be derived from incremental improvements. For many users, these new features have made a significant difference in their daily interaction with their Apple TV, showcasing the power of thoughtful design and user-centric development.

In conclusion, the latest updates to tvOS 26, particularly the enhanced picture-in-picture mode and improved Siri integration, have been well-received by users. These features, while not revolutionary, demonstrate Apple's dedication to refining its streaming platform and improving the user experience for its existing devices. As the anticipation for a new Apple TV 4K model builds, these incremental updates provide a glimpse into the potential for future enhancements and further solidify Apple's position as a leader in the streaming space.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they don’t want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didn’t notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didn’t know why they’d just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place. Doors A while back, I was at Black Seed Bagel, which has a door that looks 75% like a “push” door from both sides when it’s actually a push door from the outside and
