Three Big Takeaways from #IPSA2026

At the 2026 Independent Phytogenomics and Seed Analysis (IPSA) conference, the word "shift" was not just a buzzword but a central theme that shaped discussions and decisions among independent seed companies. The conference, held in Indianapolis, brought together industry leaders, researchers, and entrepreneurs to explore the future of the seed industry. The theme of "shift" was evident in how leadership addressed priorities, expectations, and decision-making strategies for independent seed companies.

IPSA CEO Todd Martin delivered a video presentation that highlighted the three biggest takeaways from the conference, emphasizing the importance of focus and clarity for independent seed companies. Martin's perspective provided a structured framework for addressing the questions many members were grappling with, such as where to direct energy, what to prioritize, and how to maintain effectiveness without complicating the business model.

The first takeaway from IPSA2026 was the need for independent seed companies to refine their focus. In an increasingly competitive market, companies must ensure they are laser-aligned with their core objectives and values. This means reevaluating business strategies to eliminate distractions and allocate resources effectively. By doing so, companies can better respond to market demands and stay ahead of competitors.

The second takeaway was the importance of embracing innovation. The seed industry is rapidly evolving, driven by advancements in genomics, biotechnology, and data analytics. Independent seed companies must invest in research and development to stay competitive. Martin highlighted the need for companies to adopt new technologies and collaborate with academic institutions and research organizations to drive innovation. This not only helps companies stay relevant but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement and adaptability.

The third takeaway was the necessity for independent seed companies to strengthen their supply chain and distribution networks. As global markets become more interconnected, companies must ensure they have robust supply chains to meet the demands of their customers. This involves optimizing logistics, investing in infrastructure, and building strong relationships with suppliers and distributors. By doing so, companies can reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction.

While the conference took place in Indianapolis, the insights and takeaways from IPSA2026 are applicable to independent seed companies worldwide. Whether attendees were present in person or followed the conference remotely, the three key messages from Todd Martin's presentation offer valuable guidance for companies looking to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the modern seed industry.

In conclusion, the 2026 IPSA conference underscored the importance of focus, innovation, and supply chain optimization for independent seed companies. By prioritizing these areas, companies can better position themselves for success in an ever-changing industry landscape. The conference's emphasis on "shift" served as a reminder that adaptation and strategic planning are essential for long-term growth and sustainability in the seed industry.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

Context Engineering for Coding Agents
The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit. Powerful context engineering is becoming a huge part of the developer experience of these tools. Birgitta Böckeler explains the current state of context configuration features, using Claude Code as an example. moreтАж

Does feeding less protein to cows over a longer period not only reduce nitrogen losses, but also affect methane emissions?
