In a world where fish are typically associated with aquatic environments, a rare species of tiny fish has been discovered to defy the norms of their species. The shellear fish, scientifically known as Parakneria thysi, has been observed climbing waterfall cliffs for extended periods, a feat that leaves even the most skilled human rock climbers in awe. This remarkable ability has been documented in a study published in Scientific Reports, shedding light on the extraordinary behavior of these small creatures.

For over half a century, stories have circulated in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) about these fish, which measure just 1.4 to 1.9 inches in length, scaling waterfalls with ease. However, these anecdotes lacked the necessary scientific backing until now. Biologist Pacifique Kiwele Mutambala and his team from the Universit├й de Lubumbashi embarked on a mission to verify these claims. Between 2018 and 2020, they traveled to Luvilombo Falls in the southern region of the DRC four times, capturing photographs and video footage of the fish in action.

The shellear fish's rock-climbing migrations primarily occur between April and May, towards the end of the rainy season. These fish have developed unique methods to ascend the waterfall cliffs, despite the challenging conditions. They utilize hook-like growths on the undersides of both their pectoral and pelvic fins to propel themselves upward. Additionally, they move the rear of their bodies from side to side, generating momentum that helps them overcome the force of the flowing water.

The arduous task of climbing the nearly 50-foot-high cliffside of Luvilombo Falls takes the shellear fish approximately 9 hours and 45 minutes. This time is broken down into about 15 minutes of active climbing, 30 minutes of brief pauses, and nine intervals of rest. The team's observations reveal the incredible endurance and determination of these tiny fish, as they persistently work their way up the waterfall, navigating treacherous terrain and powerful currents.

Unfortunately, the shellear fish's vertical travel routes have made them vulnerable to illegal fishing practices in the area. As they climb the waterfalls, they become easy targets for poachers, who exploit their unique behavior for their own gain. This poses a significant threat to the survival of this remarkable species, which relies on these waterfall climbs to access better habitats.

The discovery of the shellear fish's rock-climbing abilities not only highlights the incredible adaptability of these small creatures but also underscores the importance of protecting their natural habitats.
