The UK government reportedly wants Anthropic to expand its presence in London

While the US and Anthropic are in the midst of a major dispute , the UK is trying to sway the San Francisco-based AI company to expand its presence on English soil. According to a report from The Financial Times , staffers at the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology have worked on proposals that include expanding Anthropic's office in London, along with a potential dual stock listing. The UK's strategy follows a public fallout between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense earlier this year. After the AI company said it wouldn't budge on certain AI guardrails, the Department of Defense pulled its contract and eventually designated Anthropic a supply chain risk . While the designation is currently temporarily blocked by a court-ordered injunction , the feud is far from over. In the meantime, the UK's efforts to court Anthropic have ramped up in the recent weeks thanks to the company's disagreements with the US, according to FT 's sources. With no end in sight for the debacle with the Department of Defense, Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, is expected to visit the UK in May, according to FT . However, even in London, Anthropic will have to compete against OpenAI , which already committed to expanding its footprint in the English capital in February.  This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/the-uk-government-reportedly-wants-anthropic-to-expand-its-presence-in-london-174201049.html?src=rss

The UK government reportedly wants Anthropic to expand its presence in London

The UK government is reportedly pursuing Anthropic, a leading AI company based in San Francisco, to expand its operations in London. This move comes amidst a significant dispute between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense, which has led the UK to seize the opportunity to strengthen ties with the AI firm.

According to a report published by The Financial Times, officials from the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology have been working on proposals aimed at expanding Anthropic's presence in the British capital. These proposals include plans to expand the company's existing office in London, as well as the possibility of a dual stock listing. The UK's strategy follows a public fallout between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense earlier this year.

In March, Anthropic refused to compromise on certain AI guardrails, which prompted the Department of Defense to terminate its contract with the company. The US military later designated Anthropic a "supply chain risk," a move that has been temporarily blocked by a court-ordered injunction. However, the feud between the two parties is far from over, with Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, expected to visit the UK in May, according to The Financial Times.

The UK's efforts to attract Anthropic have intensified in recent weeks, driven by the ongoing disagreements between the AI company and the US government. With the US-Anthropic dispute showing no signs of resolution, the UK government sees this as an opportunity to position itself as a more welcoming environment for the firm.

However, Anthropic will not be the only AI company vying for a stronger presence in London. OpenAI, another major player in the AI industry, has already committed to expanding its footprint in the English capital in February. This means that Anthropic will face stiff competition from OpenAI, even if it decides to expand its operations in London.

The UK government's interest in Anthropic highlights its commitment to fostering a robust AI ecosystem in the country. By attracting leading AI companies, the UK aims to strengthen its position in the global AI race and ensure that it remains a key player in the development and deployment of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.

In the meantime, the US-Anthropic dispute continues to unfold, with both parties refusing to back down from their respective stances. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen whether Anthropic will ultimately choose to expand its operations in London or whether it will remain focused on its home base in San Francisco. Regardless of the outcome, the UK government's proactive approach to courting Anthropic underscores its ambition to become a leading hub for AI innovation in Europe.
