The top 25 Italy venture investors

In recent years, Italy's venture capital landscape has become increasingly competitive, with over 1,000 investors backing equity deals this year alone. This surge in activity has created a highly competitive environment where strategic positioning is key for investors to differentiate themselves and secure outsized returns. To navigate this dynamic market, top venture capital firms in Italy are focusing on high-growth areas such as AI, digital health, and space technology.

One of the leading firms in this space is CDP Venture Capital, which has been aggressively pursuing deals in cutting-edge sectors. The company has backed 139 startups since 2023, with nearly one-fifth of those investments going to AI companies. Notable AI-focused startups in CDP's portfolio include Multiverse Computing, a company specializing in AI model compression, and Axelera AI, which develops processing units. CDP's strategy has paid off, as the firm has demonstrated the best exit track record among Italian investors, backing 13 startups since 2018 that have gone on to exit. The most significant exit for CDP was the acquisition of IoT security platform Nozomi Networks by Mitsubishi Electric for $1 billion.

While CDP Venture Capital leads the ranking in terms of deal volume and exit success, Neva SGR stands out for the quality of its recent investments. Since 2023, Neva SGR's investments have achieved a higher average Mosaic score (751 out of 1,000) than any other investor on the list. This strong performance is due in part to top-performing companies in its portfolio, such as quantum computing software developer Classiq and fusion energy company Commonwealth Fusion Systems. Classiq, which has also received backing from Samsung NEXT and Qualcomm Ventures, has an impressive Mosaic score of 884. Commonwealth Fusion Systems, which secured a strategic partnership with Google earlier this year, has a Mosaic score of 869.

The top 25 venture investors in Italy are not limited to CDP Venture Capital and Neva SGR. The list includes a diverse range of firms that have built strong foundations for portfolio success. These investors have strategically positioned themselves in various high-growth sectors, ensuring that their portfolios are well-rounded and capable of delivering significant returns.

To determine the top 25 venture investors in Italy, CB Insights analyzed the dealmaking activity of hundreds of investors who fund private-market startups in exchange for equity. The ranking was based on the strength and performance of their portfolios, using a scoring methodology that took into account factors such as Mosaic scores and exit track records.

To succeed in this dynamic environment, top firms like CDP Venture Capital and Neva SGR are focusing on high-growth sectors such as AI, digital health, and space technology. By strategically positioning themselves and investing in promising startups, these firms are building strong portfolios that have the potential to deliver significant returns. As the Italian venture capital landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these top investors adapt and innovate to maintain their competitive edge.
