The Masters is a welcome oasis in golf’s fractious world, despite its stuffy foibles | Ewan Murray

No phones, no littering, no cheering bad shots – ‘patrons’ face strict rules at Augusta, but what a contrast to last year’s disgraceful Ryder Cup It is easy to poke fun at the prissy traditions of the Masters. Golfers, never mind spectators, enter a state of panic over what horrible fate may befall them should they break the rules inside Augusta National. It is preposterous in so many ways; adults consumed by fear over missteps at a golf tournament. People do not typically feel this way inside the Sistine Chapel. No phones, no littering, no cheering bad shots – ‘patrons’ face strict rules at Augusta, but what a contrast to last year’s disgraceful Ryder Cup. It is easy to poke fun at the prissy traditions of the Masters. Golfers, never mind spectators, enter a state of panic over what horrible fate may befall them should they break the rules inside Augusta National. It is preposterous in so many ways; adults consumed by fear over missteps at a golf tournament. People do not typically feel this way inside the Sistine Chapel. This year, there are reasons to be grateful for Augusta’s unapologetic approach. The Masters provides a welcome break from the ear-bashing noise of the modern world. The United States is an especially fractious place. This major also offers a timely escape from the racket within golf itself. Brief serenity should be appreciated.

Augusta National Golf Club, nestled in the heart of Georgia, has long been synonymous with tradition and exclusivity. The Masters Tournament, held annually since 1934, is more than just a golf event; it is a cultural institution that embodies the best and worst of American golf. For years, the tournament has been criticized for its rigid rules and elitist atmosphere, which many see as outdated and incompatible with the modern, fast-paced world of sports. Yet, as the world grapples with increasing polarization and chaos, the Masters stands as a rare sanctuary of order and decorum.

The rules at Augusta are unforgiving. Patrons are not allowed to use phones, litter, or even cheer loudly after a golfer hits a bad shot. Golfers themselves are subject to strict etiquette, such as walking at a leisurely pace and maintaining a low profile. These rules may seem quaint or even absurd to outsiders, but they serve a purpose. They create a sense of calm and focus that is increasingly rare in today’s chaotic society. In an age where social media dominates every aspect of life, the absence of phones at Augusta is a refreshing reminder of the value of silence and presence.

The contrast between the Masters and other golf events, such as the Ryder Cup, could not be more stark. Last year’s Ryder Cup in France was marred by controversy, including allegations of misconduct and a toxic atmosphere among players and fans. The Masters, by comparison, offers a stark reminder of what golf can be: a sport where players and spectators alike can enjoy the game without distractions or disruptions.

Moreover, the Masters provides a timely escape from the fractious world of golf itself. The sport has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including declining viewership, a lack of diverse talent, and controversies surrounding player behavior and management. The Masters, with its emphasis on tradition and sportsmanship, offers a stark contrast to these issues. It is a reminder of the sport’s rich history and the importance of upholding its core values.

While some may view the Masters’ strict rules and elitist atmosphere as stuffy or outdated, they are also a testament to the tournament’s enduring appeal. The Masters has long been a symbol of excellence and tradition, and its unapologetic adherence to these principles has helped it weather the storms of modernity.

In a world that often feels chaotic and unpredictable, the Masters offers a rare opportunity for serenity and reflection. It is a place where golfers can compete under the watchful eyes of history, and spectators can enjoy the game in a setting that prioritizes decorum and respect. As golf and the world around it continue to evolve, the Masters remains a beacon of tradition and a welcome oasis in an increasingly fractious world.

Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3 is now available. CLJ-2843 - Reflective calls to Java methods that take primitive long or double now work when passed a narrower boxed number at runtime (Integer, Short, Byte, Float). Previously, these methods were not matched during reflection and an error was thrown. Java 21 added an overload to the method Thread/sleep in the 1-arity. When upgrading to Java 21, existing Clojure calls to Thread/sleep become reflective, but continue to work. As usual, you can detect reflection with *warn-on-reflection* and address with a type hint (here, ^long ) to choose the desired overload. Previously, passing a Short or Integer value to a reflective call like Thread/sleep that takes a long would not match, that has been corrected.
