Telangana Government to Establish Special Mechanism to Check Food Adulteration
Hyderabad: Telangana Health Minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha announced on Monday, April 6, that the state government will establish a special mechanism to combat food adulteration and impose stringent measures against those involved. The minister made the announcement after flagging off a food safety awareness walkathon in the city.
Rajanarasimha highlighted that the state government has already set up EAGLE Force (Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement) to tackle drug-related issues. He mentioned that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed the formation of a special unit dedicated to preventing food contamination. The government has taken several proactive steps, including appointing 24 new food inspectors and introducing five new mobile testing vehicles.
In addition, the state government has decided to establish three new regional food testing laboratories in Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, and Hanumakonda. The minister emphasized that the government has been conducting an enforcement drive and joint checks by police and food safety officials. Over the past two years, around 11,000 such checks have been conducted.
Rajanarasimha pointed out that unhealthy eating habits among the population have contributed to the rise of non-communicable diseases in Telangana, including Hyderabad. He noted that the consumption of spurious food is causing health issues related to digestion and other ailments. The minister also linked rapid urbanization and a busy lifestyle to a decline in home cooking, leading to an increased reliance on the food industry.
With the expansion of the food industry, there are approximately 1.41 lakh establishments in the state involved in food businesses. The government supports the growth of the food industry as it generates employment opportunities. However, the minister stressed the need for "growth with responsibility" to ensure the safety and quality of food products.
The proposed measures include invoking the provisions of the Preventive Detention Act against those found guilty of food adulteration. The state government is taking a firm stand against food contamination, recognizing its impact on public health and well-being.
