Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called for the immediate recall of the Dáil to address the escalating fuel crisis, warning that it is having a direct and severe impact on farming, housing, the cost of living, and the wider economy. Fitzmaurice, who serves as the agriculture spokesperson for his party, stated that the situation has worsened significantly in recent days.
In his plea for urgent action, Fitzmaurice cited the rising cost of green diesel, which has reached €1.70 per litre. He also noted that petrol and diesel prices are heading back towards levels seen before excise cuts, placing unsustainable pressure on households and key sectors. The TD emphasized that ten days ago, he outlined the key issues they would face if the government did not act, and now the crisis is escalating in real time. "We must act urgently," Fitzmaurice urged, adding that the Dáil must be recalled immediately to address the situation.
Fitzmaurice also questioned the clarity surrounding the country's fuel reserves, stating that there is a need to know "what reserves we have in the first place." He expressed confusion over statements made by some ministers, which suggested that the country might not have the three months' emergency supply that has been previously mentioned. "If we don't have 90 days' supply in reserve, why are we paying NORA (National Oil Reserves Agency) for the last number of decades?" he asked.
The TD warned that rising green diesel costs are impacting every stage of housing delivery and agricultural production. He explained that every digger, dumper, and machine on a building site runs on green diesel, and at current prices, this is adding significant daily costs that will ultimately be passed on to homebuyers. "You cannot build houses, roads, or infrastructure without this fuel," he said. "If costs continue to rise unchecked, the housing crisis will worsen."
Fitzmaurice reiterated that machinery across construction and quarrying is heavily dependent on green diesel, warning that continued inaction will "cripple housing delivery." He also highlighted the implications for agriculture, particularly as the silo prices for grain are expected to rise due to the fuel shortage. The TD argued that the government must take immediate action to address the fuel crisis and prevent further damage to the economy and key sectors such as farming and housing.
Fitzmaurice's call for the Dáil recall comes as the fuel crisis intensifies, with concerns growing about the impact on everyday life and the broader economy. The government has been urged to provide clear information on the country's fuel reserves and outline a plan to mitigate the effects of the crisis on households and businesses. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the pressure on the government to act grows, with Fitzmaurice's plea serving as a stark reminder of the urgent need for decisive action.
