Taxi driver arrested for demanding HK$85 ‘highway toll’ from undercover officers

Hong Kong police have arrested a 31-year-old taxi driver for demanding an unauthorized “highway toll” of about HK$85 (US$11) from undercover officers posing as passengers. The incident occurred during a targeted operation to crack down on taxi violations on Lantau Island.

The police operation, conducted on Monday, aimed to identify and address various taxi-related offenses, including unauthorized charges and improper conduct by drivers. Officers disguised as passengers boarded a taxi at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and requested a ride to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint.

As the taxi approached the checkpoint, the driver suddenly demanded an additional HK$85 fee, describing it as a “highway toll.” The undercover officers, who were part of the police’s traffic enforcement unit, immediately alerted their superiors. Upon receiving the report, officers intervened and arrested the taxi driver on the spot.

The 31-year-old driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, faced charges under the Road Traffic Ordinance for unlawfully demanding money from passengers. If convicted, he could face a fine of up to HK$25,000 and a prison term of up to three years.
