Scottish broadband service looking a bit dreich, says UK outage study

A recent study by Broadband Genie has revealed that broadband subscribers in Scotland are experiencing the highest number of outages in the UK, with customers in the north of the border suffering the most long-running failures per £100 spent. The findings highlight significant disparities in broadband reliability across the UK, with BT customers typically experiencing the fewest outages.

The study, which analyzed data from various broadband providers, found that Scottish subscribers were plagued by more frequent and prolonged outages compared to their counterparts in other parts of the UK. This has raised concerns about the quality of broadband services in Scotland, particularly in rural areas where connectivity can already be a challenge.

One of the key factors contributing to these outages is the geographical spread of Scotland. The country's vast and often remote terrain makes it difficult for broadband providers to maintain reliable connections. Additionally, the older infrastructure in some areas exacerbates the problem, leading to frequent disruptions.

Despite these challenges, broadband providers in Scotland have been working to improve their services. However, the study suggests that there is still a long way to go before Scottish subscribers can enjoy the same level of reliability as those in other regions.

In contrast, BT customers, who are predominantly located in England, Wales, and parts of Scotland, have been found to experience the fewest outages. This is largely due to the company's extensive investment in modernizing its infrastructure and expanding its coverage across the UK.

The disparities highlighted by the Broadband Genie study have prompted calls for more targeted investment in Scotland's broadband infrastructure. Regulatory bodies and government agencies are now urging providers to prioritize improvements in the north of the border to ensure that all UK residents have access to reliable broadband services.

The study also underscores the importance of transparency in broadband service quality. By providing detailed information about outages and service reliability, providers can help consumers make informed decisions about which service to choose.

In conclusion, the recent UK outage study has revealed that Scottish broadband subscribers are facing significant challenges, with more frequent and long-lasting outages than those in other parts of the UK. While BT customers have fared better, the disparities in service quality across the country are a cause for concern. To address these issues, broadband providers and policymakers must work together to improve infrastructure and ensure that all UK residents have access to reliable broadband services.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also
