Roger Goodell Is Blitzing the Hell Out of Hollywood

Nobody in town seems to want to talk about this, but one of the biggest threats to the film and TV industry maybe isn’t A.I. or YouTube or whatever studio Larry Ellison is consolidating today. It’s football. Are you following the NFL’s latest shakedown attempt? You should be. The league’s current broadcast partners—that’s CBS, Fox, […] The post Roger Goodell Is Blitzing the Hell Out of Hollywood appeared first on Puck .

Roger Goodell Is Blitzing the Hell Out of Hollywood

In a surprising turn of events, the NFL, under the leadership of Roger Goodell, is poised to challenge the film and television industry in a way that few anticipated. While threats to Hollywood are often discussed in terms of artificial intelligence, streaming platforms, or corporate consolidations like those led by Larry Ellison, the reality is that football—and specifically the NFL—is becoming a formidable force in the entertainment landscape. The league's latest broadcast deal negotiations are sending shockwaves through Hollywood, as they threaten to redefine the dynamics of the media industry.

The NFL's broadcast partners, including CBS, Fox, and NBC, have traditionally been the backbone of the league's success. These networks have provided the platform for the NFL's games, which have consistently drawn massive viewership. However, as the league's value continues to soar, so too does its bargaining power. The recent negotiations for broadcast rights have been intense, with the NFL demanding unprecedented financial commitments from the networks. This has led to a situation where the traditional broadcasting giants are being forced to compete fiercely for the rights to air NFL games.

The stakes are high for both the NFL and the networks. The league, buoyed by its record-breaking Super Bowl viewership and the immense popularity of its games, is leveraging its power to secure the most lucrative broadcast deal in history. On the other hand, the networks are struggling to maintain their grip on the NFL, as they face mounting pressure to invest in the league's demands. This tension has created a situation where the NFL is not only challenging the traditional broadcasting landscape but also posing a threat to the film and television industry as a whole.

The impact of this on Hollywood cannot be understated. For decades, the film and television industries have dominated the entertainment sector, capturing the imagination of audiences worldwide. However, the NFL's growing influence is beginning to shift the balance of power. With the potential for the league to command even more significant financial resources, it is now in a position to rival, if not surpass, the film and television industries in terms of reach and influence.

Moreover, the NFL's success is not limited to its traditional broadcasting partners. The league has been actively exploring new avenues to deliver its content, such as through its own streaming service, NFL Network, and partnerships with other digital platforms. This diversification of distribution channels further underscores the NFL's determination to carve out its own niche in the entertainment market.

The challenge posed by the NFL to Hollywood is not without its complications. As the league continues to expand its influence, it will inevitably face scrutiny and resistance from the film and television industries. However, the NFL's track record of success, combined with its unwavering commitment to innovation and strategic growth, suggests that it is well-positioned to withstand such challenges.

In conclusion, the NFL's latest broadcast deal negotiations are a stark reminder of the league's growing power and influence in the entertainment industry. Under the leadership of Roger Goodell, the NFL is blitzing Hollywood in a way that few could have predicted. As the league continues to push boundaries and redefine the landscape of sports entertainment, it remains to be seen how the film and television industries will adapt to this new threat. One thing is certain, however: the NFL's impact on the entertainment world is only set to grow, reshaping the industry in ways that will be felt for years to come.

Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3 is now available. CLJ-2843 - Reflective calls to Java methods that take primitive long or double now work when passed a narrower boxed number at runtime (Integer, Short, Byte, Float). Previously, these methods were not matched during reflection and an error was thrown. Java 21 added an overload to the method Thread/sleep in the 1-arity. When upgrading to Java 21, existing Clojure calls to Thread/sleep become reflective, but continue to work. As usual, you can detect reflection with *warn-on-reflection* and address with a type hint (here, ^long ) to choose the desired overload. Previously, passing a Short or Integer value to a reflective call like Thread/sleep that takes a long would not match, that has been corrected.
