Chris Dixon, a prominent figure in the crypto space and a longtime entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and friend, has recently penned a book titled "Read Write Own." The book, available for pre-order now and set to ship later this month, offers a unique perspective on the evolution of the internet and the role of blockchain networks in shaping the future.
Dixon's decision to write the book stems from two primary motivations. Personalally, he felt the need to reaffirm his commitment to investing in blockchain networks during a recent downturn. Practically, he aimed to explain the intricacies of blockchain networks to a wide audience, including young adults considering career paths, concerned family members, and policymakers in Washington, D.C.
While Dixon refers to these networks as "Blockchain Networks," the term "Web3" resonates more deeply with me. My own investing journey began during the early days of the web, which I label as Web1. It gained momentum during the second phase, often referred to as Web2. For the past decade, I've envisioned a more robust version of the web, which I call Web3. Dixon's framework mirrors this journey but uses the terms "Read," "Write," and "Own" to describe the distinct phases.
The initial phase of the web, marked by the advent of web browsers, was predominantly a reading experience. By the early 2000s, the web transitioned to a two-way platform, enabling users to both read and write content. Blockchain networks have now unlocked a new dimension: ownership. Individuals can own their digital identities, social media posts, financial assets, art, music, and more.
Dixon's book is structured into three parts. The first part traces the history of the web, detailing its evolution from its inception to the present day. The second part delves into the mechanics of blockchain networks, emphasizing their significance and potential. The final section explores the implications of these networks on various aspects of society, from identity to finance.
"Read Write Own" serves as a comprehensive guide for those seeking to understand the intersection of technology and society. It bridges the gap between the technical complexities of blockchain and the everyday lives of individuals, offering insights into a future where ownership and control are decentralized. As Dixon's work continues to shape the crypto landscape, his book provides a valuable resource for those navigating this transformative era.
