Our generation will continue resisting the Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls

In Afghanistan, education has become a powerful tool for resistance against the Taliban's oppressive restrictions on women and girls. This is a story of determination and resilience, told by Fareshtah, a young woman who has witnessed the turmoil and challenges faced by her generation since the Taliban's takeover in August 2021.

Fareshtah was born in 1996, the last year of the first Taliban regime in Afghanistan's central Ghor Province. Her childhood was marked by the instability and uncertainty caused by the conflict between the Taliban and the Afghan government. Despite the challenges, she was fortunate enough to gain access to education after the fall of the first Taliban regime. She recalls her excitement on her first day of school, wearing a black uniform and a white scarf, symbols of her newfound freedom and opportunity.

The years 2020 and 2021 were particularly significant for Fareshtah. She had found her path and was on the verge of achieving her goals. She was studying Sharia and Islamic Sciences, aspiring to become a successful attorney. To further her education, she registered for a two-year legal skills program through the Asia Foundation and the Ministry of Higher Education. These years were a time of hope and optimism, as she immersed herself in her studies and envisioned a brighter future.

However, her journey was not without challenges. The war between the Taliban and government forces was intensifying, and the security situation was deteriorating. The extreme heatwaves of the time meant that her university and legal skills classes were held both in person and online, adapting to the changing circumstances. Despite the unrest, Fareshtah persevered, driven by her passion for learning and her desire to contribute positively to society.

The news of the collapse of provinces one after another was a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict. Yet, Fareshtah's determination to continue her education remained unwavering. She understood that education was not just a personal goal, but a form of resistance against the Taliban's oppressive policies.

In 2021, the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan brought new restrictions and challenges for women and girls. The Taliban imposed strict rules on women's education, limiting their access to schools and universities. However, Fareshtah and her peers refused to be deterred. They recognized that education was their greatest weapon in the fight for their rights and freedoms.

Despite the Taliban's restrictions, many Afghan girls and women have continued to pursue their education in secret or through online platforms. They have shown remarkable courage and resilience, defying the odds and refusing to be silenced. Fareshtah's story is a testament to the strength and determination of her generation, who are determined to resist the Taliban's attempts to suppress their rights.

Education has become a beacon of hope for Afghan women and girls, a means to challenge the Taliban's oppressive regime. As Fareshtah and her peers continue to fight for their right to learn, they are also fighting for a future where women and girls can live with dignity and freedom. Their struggle is a powerful reminder that education is not just a privilege, but a fundamental right that must be upheld and protected.

In the face of adversity, Fareshtah's generation is proving that education is a powerful force for change. They are resisting the Taliban's restrictions with unwavering determination, paving the way for a brighter future for all Afghan women and girls. Their story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human mind and the transformative power of education in the fight for freedom and equality.
