OpenMined at the India AI Impact Summit 2026

OpenMined, a leading organization focused on privacy-preserving AI infrastructure, is participating in the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, partnering with the Human Genome Project II (HGP2). The collaboration aims to showcase how privacy-preserving infrastructure can empower countries to engage in global AI-driven genomics research on their own terms, without the need to centralize sensitive health data. Over the course of the summit week, OpenMined is hosting three events that will explore the intersection of genomics, AI, and data sovereignty.

The first event, titled "Genomics, AI, and the Future of Health: Data Visitation to Empower the Global South," will take place on Monday, February 16, from 2:30 PM to 3:25 PM IST, in Bharat Mandapam, Room 15. This session will address the disparities in the distribution of AI and genomics benefits to public health. Current data sovereignty requirements, ethical obligations, and cross-border restrictions often prevent genomic datasets from being utilized collectively for research and AI development. By introducing the concept of data visitation, the model shifts from centralizing sensitive data to securely allowing algorithms to access data within national or institutional boundaries. The session will demonstrate the practical application of data visitation through BioVault, drawing on real-world examples of AI-enabled health system implementation.

Following the summit session, OpenMined and HGP2 will host a closed working session on Tuesday, February 17, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM IST, at the India International Centre in New Delhi. This meeting, titled "From Framework to Implementation: A Policy Meeting on Data Visitation for Genomics and Health," will bring together policymakers, researchers, and technologists to refine a Data Visitation Implementation Framework. The goal is to move beyond shared understanding to shared decisions on policy, governance, and operational pathways. The discussion will focus on translating policy principles into clear governance and implementation parameters, including sovereignty, consent, auditability, and access control. Special attention will be given to ensuring alignment with national law and public health missions.

The outcomes of these discussions will directly inform subsequent pilot activities aimed at advancing data visitation for genomics and health. By fostering collaboration between policymakers, researchers, and technologists, OpenMined and HGP2 are working to create a framework that enables countries to participate in global AI-driven genomics research while safeguarding sensitive health data and upholding data sovereignty. This approach not only empowers the global South but also promotes equitable access to AI-driven health benefits, ensuring that advancements in genomics and AI are harnessed for the betterment of all.

Through its participation in the India AI Impact Summit 2026, OpenMined is demonstrating the potential of privacy-preserving infrastructure to transform the landscape of AI-driven genomics research. By prioritizing data sovereignty and collaboration, the organization is helping to bridge the gap between global research potential and the equitable distribution of its benefits. The events hosted by OpenMined during the summit week are pivotal in shaping a future where AI and genomics advancements are accessible to all, without compromising the privacy and security of sensitive health data.
