On the Brink Episode 4: The End of the Status Quo

Recent federal budget cuts have led to the closure of key research facilities across Canada, prompting concerns about the future of plant breeding in the country. Doug Miller, a representative from the Canadian Seed Growers Association, joins the fourth episode of "On the Brink" to explore what the next model for Canadian plant breeding might look like and who will be responsible for building it. The episode is set against the backdrop of a grocery store aisle, a deliberate choice to emphasize the importance of seeds in our daily lives. Nine out of every ten bites of food we consume begin with a seed, making the stakes of this discussion impossible to ignore.

Miller reflects on the systems that have historically supported plant breeding in Canada and what it will take to transition from what has worked in the past to what is needed now. The closure of federal research facilities is not an isolated issue; it accelerates a broader pressure already building across the Canadian seed sector. This pressure stems from shrinking public investment in variety testing, pre-competitive breeding research, and regional programs that serve crops and geographies where private returns are limited. The concern extends beyond the immediate loss of these facilities; it also involves the absence of foundational work that will not exist in a decade due to these cuts.

The episode highlights the questions the industry must answer without the luxury of easy solutions. Doug Miller, standing in a grocery store aisle, underscores the need for public and private roles to evolve in order to support the future of plant breeding. The closure of federal research facilities raises questions about the long-term sustainability of the industry, which relies on continuity and long-term investment.

The "On the Brink" series aims to spark an open, multi-perspective, and ongoing conversation about crop innovation. Each episode brings together farmers, breeders, researchers, and other industry stakeholders to share their perspectives. By delivering new episodes weekly, the series ensures that the conversation remains dynamic and inclusive, representing diverse voices and perspectives from across Canada's plant breeding and agricultural innovation ecosystem.

In the fourth episode, viewers are invited to consider the implications of these changes and the challenges that lie ahead for the Canadian seed sector. The episode serves as a reminder that the future of plant breeding in Canada depends on the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including public institutions, private organizations, and the broader agricultural community. As the status quo is no longer an option, the industry must work together to build a new model that supports the needs of farmers, breeders, and consumers alike.

Subscribing to "On the Brink" ensures that viewers stay informed about the latest developments and perspectives in the industry. With new episodes released weekly, the series provides a platform for ongoing dialogue and collaboration, fostering a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Canadian plant breeding. By continuing to engage with the series, viewers can contribute to the conversation and help shape the future of this vital industry.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

Context Engineering for Coding Agents
The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit. Powerful context engineering is becoming a huge part of the developer experience of these tools. Birgitta Böckeler explains the current state of context configuration features, using Claude Code as an example. moreтАж

What does less protein and nitrogen mean for methane?
Does feeding less protein to cows over a longer period not only reduce nitrogen losses, but also affect methane emissions? Researchers at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) investigated this in a multi-year study with dairy cows, funded by the Vereniging Diervoederonderzoek Nederland (VDN), the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN), and […] The post What does less protein and nitrogen mean for methane? appeared first on Agriland.ie .
