On the Brink Episode 1: Canada is On the Brink. Let’s Talk About It

Canadian plant breeding is at a crossroads, and the decisions made now will shape agriculture in this country for decades to come. The future of Canadian agriculture is not in question; the real question is the direction it will take. Seed World, a platform dedicated to exploring the science and innovation behind plant breeding, has launched a new video series titled "On the Brink." This series will delve into the future of Canada's seed and crop innovation system, highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

The first episode, "On the Brink Episode 1: Canada is On the Brink. Let’s Talk About It," sets the stage for a cross-Canada journey into the country's crop future. Canadian plant breeding, while rarely making headlines, plays a crucial role in ensuring a resilient and sustainable food system. Every crop that withstands drought, disease, and Canada's short growing season begins with the work of plant breeders—scientists and innovators who develop varieties tailored to the country's unique climate and geography.

This process is not quick; it can take a decade or more from the initial cross to the moment a farmer plants a new variety. The journey involves years of research, testing across regions, and sustained investment in people, infrastructure, and knowledge. For decades, this system has been instrumental in helping Canadian agriculture thrive, resulting in stronger crops, better resilience, higher productivity, and a food system that competes globally while feeding Canadians at home.

However, the landscape is changing. The challenges faced by the industry are significant. Climate change, shifting market demands, and economic pressures are putting Canada's plant breeding system under strain. The stakes are high: decisions made now could lead to extraordinary innovation or the loss of capacity that has been painstakingly built over decades.

Seed World's "On the Brink" series aims to shed light on these issues and explore the stories of the people shaping Canada's plant breeding system. From researchers and breeders to farmers, seed companies, and policymakers, the series will highlight the science, partnerships, and long-term investments that make Canadian crop innovation possible.

Each week, viewers will be treated to a new video story that delves into the complexities of plant breeding and its role in Canada's agricultural future. The series will also examine the potential consequences of different choices, encouraging dialogue and reflection on the direction the country should take.

As the series progresses, it will cover various regions across Canada, showcasing the diversity of the country's agricultural landscape. From the fertile plains of Alberta to the rugged terrain of British Columbia, each area presents unique challenges and opportunities for plant breeding. The series will explore how breeders are adapting to these conditions and developing crops that can withstand the harsh realities of Canadian farming.

Moreover, the "On the Brink" series will examine the role of innovation in addressing the challenges faced by the industry. From genetic engineering to traditional breeding techniques, the series will highlight the latest advancements and their potential impact on Canada's agricultural future. It will also explore the importance of collaboration between researchers, breeders, and farmers in developing crops that meet the needs of the market and the environment.

Policymakers will also be a focal point of the series. The decisions made by governments at all levels will have a significant impact on the future of plant breeding in Canada. The series will examine the current policies and their effectiveness in supporting the industry, as well as propose potential solutions to address the challenges faced.

Ultimately, "On the Brink" is not just about plant breeding—it's about the future of Canadian agriculture and the role it plays in feeding the nation and competing on a global stage. The series aims to spark conversation and encourage Canadians to think critically about the choices that will shape their food system for generations to come.

As the first episode of the series launches, viewers are invited to join Seed World on this journey to understand the complexities of plant breeding and the pivotal role it plays in Canada's agricultural future. With a focus on storytelling and in-depth exploration, "On the Brink" promises to provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the industry, and inspire action to secure a sustainable and thriving agricultural system for Canada.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they don’t want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didn’t notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didn’t know why they’d just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place. Doors A while back, I was at Black Seed Bagel, which has a door that looks 75% like a “push” door from both sides when it’s actually a push door from the outside and
