New journal aims to advance the interdisciplinary field of personalized health

The field of personalized health, which focuses on tailoring medical interventions to individual patients, is rapidly evolving. This approach requires innovative solutions that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, necessitating collaboration among engineers, biomedical researchers, computer scientists, and clinicians. To address this interdisciplinary challenge, a new open-access journal, Medical Sensors & Imaging (MSI), has been launched by IOP Publishing. The journal aims to provide a dedicated platform for researchers working at the intersection of sensing, imaging, modeling, and data-driven healthcare, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and accelerating advancements in personalized health.

Personalized health relies on the development of advanced sensors that generate clinically meaningful data outside hospital settings, novel imaging modalities, and computational tools capable of handling the uncertainties inherent in dealing with individual patients. These innovations often emerge at the intersection of multiple disciplines, making it challenging for researchers to publish and share their findings in a unified forum. The new journal, Medical Sensors & Imaging, was created to fill this gap, offering a centralized platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge dissemination.

Marco Palombo, the founding editor-in-chief of MSI from Cardiff University, emphasizes the need for a journal that breaks down traditional silos and encourages cross-disciplinary research. "We want a journal where physicists, engineers, computer scientists, biomedical researchers, and clinicians can publish and read work that advances personalized health without being confined to traditional disciplinary boundaries," Palombo explains. "MSI also aims to play an important role in strengthening interdisciplinary exchange."

Xiliang Luo, the deputy editor of MSI from Qingdao University of Science and Technology, highlights the importance of a specialized forum that validates innovations specifically designed to solve complex biomedical challenges. "The community needs a place that doesn't just report on new materials or a clinical trial but focuses on groundbreaking solutions that can make a tangible difference in healthcare," Luo states. "I think this journal is a perfect fit for that gap."

Published by IOP Publishing on behalf of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), MSI is fully open for submissions. The journal's mission is to connect researchers from diverse disciplines, enabling them to share their work and collaborate on projects that drive progress in personalized health. By fostering interdisciplinary communication and innovation, Medical Sensors & Imaging is poised to become a vital resource for the scientific community working to revolutionize healthcare through personalized approaches.

In an era where interdisciplinary research is increasingly crucial, the launch of Medical Sensors & Imaging represents a significant step towards creating a cohesive and collaborative environment for advancements in personalized health. As the field continues to evolve, this new journal will serve as a hub for groundbreaking research, bridging gaps between disciplines and accelerating the development of innovative solutions that address the unique needs of individual patients.
