At the 100th anniversary of the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society, a relatively new Angus herd made its mark on the Carrick on Shannon Showgrounds in County Roscommon. The event, held on April 4, was a celebration of pedigree livestock and a showcase for the best in the industry. Among the highlights was the impressive performance of Niall Conaty's Ellens Angus Herd, established in 2018, which took home three of the top four prices and the Champion Angus bull title.
Niall Conaty, a Cavan man, showcased his herd with three home-bred bulls in the pre-sale show, all of which received rosettes. This was a significant achievement, given that the Ellens Angus Herd is relatively new compared to other herds with long-established pedigree prefixes. Conaty's bull, Lot 43 Ellens Buddy, sold for the highest price of the day at €8,800. The bull was sired by Drumcrow Reeko, and his dam, Shankill Martha, was by Thrunton Rocket. The new owner of Ellens Buddy is John Farrell, who purchased the bull for Ballinwing Farm, established in 1924 by Jim Mulvey. Interestingly, Jim Mulvey was one of the founding members of the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society, which was celebrating its centenary year.
The day's judging was handled by Albert De Cogan from Castlemartyr, County Cork, for the Angus and Hereford classes, and Ronan O'Hare from Portumna, County Galway, for the Shorthorn classes. A total of 82 pedigree bulls and 21 pedigree heifers were exhibited, with 55 bulls and 16 heifers selling at an average price of €4,310 and €2,378, respectively. The 50 Angus bulls sold averaged €4,437, with Niall Conaty's Ellens Buddy topping the list at €8,800.
In addition to the competitive atmosphere, the event featured special rosettes and medals sponsored by the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) for class winners. The centenary celebration of the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society added a sense of history and tradition to the day. Attendees included Finbar Cahill and Packie Cahill of the Shankill Angus Herd, who were pictured with Niall Conaty.
The success of the Ellens Angus Herd at the centenary Carrick sale highlights the potential of newer herds to make a significant impact in the industry. With a strong pedigree and skilled management, Niall Conaty's herd has proven itself as a formidable competitor, earning top honors and setting a high standard for others to follow. The event served as a reminder of the importance of breeding excellence and the continuous evolution of the livestock industry.
