At the 100th anniversary of the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society's pedigree show and sale held on April 4 at Carrick on Shannon Showgrounds in County Roscommon, a relatively new Angus herd made a significant impact. Owned by Niall Conaty, the Ellens Angus Herd prefix, established in 2018, took home three of the top four prices and claimed the Champion Angus bull title. The event, which celebrated the centenary of the society, featured special rosettes and medals sponsored by the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) for class winners.
Niall Conaty, a Cavan man, showcased his home-bred bulls in the pre-sale show, where they all received rosettes. The judging of the Angus and Hereford classes was conducted by Albert De Cogan from Castlemartyr, County Cork, while Ronan O’Hare from Portumna, County Galway, judged the Shorthorn classes. On the day, there were 82 pedigree bulls and 21 pedigree heifers exhibited, with 55 bulls and 16 heifers selling at average prices of €4,310 and €2,378, respectively. The 50 Angus bulls sold averaged €4,437, with the highest price of €8,800 achieved by Niall Conaty for his bull, Lot 43 Ellens Buddy.
Lot 43 Ellens Buddy, sired by Drumcrow Reeko, had a dam named Shankill Martha by Thrunton Rocket. The bull was purchased by John Farrell for the Ballinwing Farm, which was established in 1924 by James Mulvey, one of the founding members of the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society. The sale marked a significant achievement for Niall Conaty and his relatively new herd, as they dominated the top prices and titles.
The centenary event highlighted the dedication and hard work of breeders like Niall Conaty, who have contributed to the growth and success of the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society over the past 100 years. The presence of the RDS-sponsored rosettes and medals further emphasized the prestige of the show, attracting breeders and enthusiasts from across the region.
In conclusion, the 100th anniversary of the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society's pedigree show and sale was a memorable occasion, with Niall Conaty's Ellens Angus Herd making a remarkable impression. Their dominance in the top prices and titles showcased the potential of even relatively new herds in the competitive world of pedigree livestock. The event also served as a tribute to the society's rich history and the breeders who have shaped its legacy over the past century.
