My husband died 10 years ago. I just gave birth to our daughter at 49.
Laura Orrico, a 49-year-old widow, shares how she used her late husband's frozen sperm to have a baby after years of IVF, miscarriages, and grief.

Laura Orrico, a 49-year-old widow, shares her extraordinary journey of becoming a mother 10 years after the loss of her husband, Ryan. The couple had been trying for a child during Ryan's battle with a brain tumor, but their efforts resulted in multiple miscarriages. After his death, Laura struggled with grief and the idea of motherhood, but eventually found the courage to use her late husband's frozen sperm to conceive their daughter, Aviana, at the age of 49.
Laura's story begins in 1999 when she met Ryan at a movie theater. They quickly became close, and their relationship blossomed over the years. Both attended Columbia College in Chicago, where Ryan studied directing and screenwriting, while Laura pursued her career in the entertainment industry and founded her own PR firm. Their love was deep and passionate, and they dreamed of starting a family together.
However, in 2007, Ryan was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The couple embarked on a difficult journey, trying to conceive during his illness. They underwent intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF), but faced multiple miscarriages. Despite the heartache, Laura and Ryan remained hopeful, clinging to the dream of becoming parents.
Tragically, Ryan passed away in 2012 at the age of 38, leaving Laura a widow at 38. The grief was overwhelming, and the idea of motherhood seemed unattainable. Laura moved on with her life, focusing on her career and building new relationships, but the longing for a child remained.
A decade later, in 2022, Laura decided to try once more to conceive using her late husband's frozen sperm. She had stored some of his sperm before his death, and now, with the advancements in medical technology, she felt it was the right time to pursue their dream. The process was emotional and challenging, but Laura persevered, driven by her love for Ryan and her desire to honor his memory.
On June 9, 2025, Laura received the news that her embryo transfer was successful, and she was pregnant. Overwhelmed with emotion, she drove to see her 79-year-old mother, who had multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease and was in a rehabilitation facility at the time. Laura bought a celebratory balloon and placed it in a Trader Joe's bag, intending to share the news with her mother.
When Laura arrived, she asked her mother to reach inside the bag. The balloon didn't automatically float out, and her mother extracted it, reading out loud, "Congratulations?" Laura took a deep breath and shared the news: "Congratulations, Grandma!" Her mother's eyes filled with tears of joy and relief.
Laura's journey is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the human spirit. Her daughter, Aviana, is a beautiful reminder of the life they were unable to create together, but the bond between mother and child is a gift that transcends time and loss. Laura's story inspires hope for those who have experienced heartache and loss, reminding us that the possibility of new beginnings often lies in the most unexpected of places.
