Fourth-year agricultural science students at Munster Technological University (MTU) in Kerry recently had the opportunity to showcase their talents to prospective employers during the annual MTU Careers Day. The event, which took place in the university's new science, technology, engineering, and maths building, An Cuan, featured 25 students participating in mock interviews with a range of industry representatives.

The state-of-the-art An Cuan building, which can accommodate around 1,000 students, includes lecture theatres, classrooms, machinery workshops, halls, and laboratories. This year, the careers day was expanded to include students from the MTU pharmaceutical science and veterinary bioscience degree courses, broadening the scope of the event and providing more students with valuable industry exposure.

Dr. Brendan O'Connell, dean of the new Faculty of Science and Informatics at MTU, highlighted the transformative impact of the new building on the campus. "The opening of the new building in September has really energised the campus," he said. "It has been transformational in terms of the knowledge and the additional skillsets which the students can work with."

O'Connell emphasized the importance of industry engagement for the technological university sector. "Industry opens their doors to us in terms of site visits, placement opportunities, research opportunities, and scholarship programmes," he explained. "I think the interactions between the students and the industry leaders really equips our students for future recruitment processes and builds their confidence."

Dr. Bridget Breen, a lecturer in biosciences at MTU, noted that agricultural science students gain significant exposure to the industry during their four-year honours degree programme. "They are ready for work when they go out on placement even," she said. "The Careers Day provides them with an additional opportunity to build their resumes and demonstrate their capabilities to potential employers."

The expansion of the careers day to include pharmaceutical science and veterinary bioscience students reflects the university's commitment to fostering strong connections between its students and the wider industry. By providing these students with the chance to engage directly with industry representatives, MTU is helping to prepare them for successful careers in their chosen fields.

The event also underscores the value of the new An Cuan building, which has become a hub for academic and industry collaboration. With its advanced facilities and resources, the building serves as an ideal setting for such initiatives, enabling students to gain practical experience and confidence in their abilities.

In conclusion, the MTU Careers Day has proven to be a valuable opportunity for students to make a strong impression on potential employers and gain valuable industry experience. By expanding the event to include students from pharmaceutical science and veterinary bioscience, the university is further enhancing its commitment to preparing students for success in their chosen careers. The state-of-the-art An Cuan building plays a crucial role in facilitating these interactions, ensuring that students have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in their future endeavors.
