Many Culture Causes

In a recent study, three leading large language models (LLMs)—ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini—were tasked with evaluating the relative explanatory power of 16 different causes of cultural change across two distinct periods: 1700-1900 and 1900-2025. The research aimed to understand how cultural shifts have been influenced by various factors over time.

The study involved two main components: polls and LLM analysis. For the polls, respondents were asked to select one of four causes from a list of 16. The LLMs, on the other hand, were instructed to think of 50 cultural changes in each period and rate each cause on a 0-10 scale for its relevance to each change. The scores were then summed up for each cause, providing a comprehensive view of their overall explanatory power.

One of the key findings was the significant role of "Elite Youth Culture" in driving cultural change, particularly during the 1900-2025 period. The rise of high school and college education, along with youth-led movements, played a crucial role in shaping cultural trends. Changes that resonated with elite youths gained traction and became more influential.

Another notable cause was "Lazy/Myopic/Selfish/Pleas," which saw a resurgence in the latter period. The shift towards a more relaxed, self-centered, and pleasure-oriented lifestyle became a dominant force in cultural change. This was in stark contrast to the earlier period, where such attitudes were less prevalent.

The "Forager Reversion" cause, which emphasizes art, leisure, democracy, and equality, also gained prominence in the 1900-2025 period. This trend reflects a backlash against more rigid social structures and a desire for greater freedom and egalitarianism.

"Individualism, Authentic" and "Innovate, Explore, Create" were two other significant factors. The rise of individualism and authenticity, along with a greater emphasis on innovation and creativity, contributed to cultural shifts in both periods. However, their impact was more pronounced in the latter period, reflecting the growing importance of personal expression and technological advancements.

The study also highlighted the role of "Abstract Concept, Reason" in shaping cultural change, particularly in the 1900-2025 period. The increased reliance on abstract thinking and reasoning led to more complex cultural narratives and ideas.

"Rich, Safe, Trade/Talk" was another cause that gained traction, especially in the latter period. Cultural changes that appealed to wealthier, more secure populations, and those that facilitated wider communication and trade, became more influential.

"Merging Culture Appeal" was identified as a key factor in the 1900-2025 period, as globalization and increased cultural exchange led to a greater diversity of cultural influences. This period saw a rise in cultural changes that could appeal to a wide range of merging cultures.

"Fashion/Elite Displace" also played a significant role, particularly in the latter period. Fashion became a dominant driver of cultural change, with elites using it as a tool to displace other elites and assert their status.

"Media/Word Legible" was another important factor, as the ability to spread cultural changes through words and mass media became more crucial in both periods. The legibility of change symbols ensured their wider acceptance and dissemination.

"Big Org/Inst. Codify" was found to be influential in the latter period, as large organizations and institutions began to codify and standardize new cultural developments, giving them greater legitimacy and reach.

"Sounds Good, Short-Run" and "Visible Sacrifice" were also significant in the latter period. Cultural changes that promised quick, tangible benefits and those that involved visible sacrifices, which signified allegiance, gained traction.

Lastly, "Lose Religion/Fragment" was identified as a cause of cultural fragmentation in the latter period. The decline of religion and traditional cultural glues led to increased cultural divergence and a fragmented social landscape.

In conclusion, the study reveals that cultural change has been shaped by a complex interplay of factors across different periods. The 1900-2025 period saw a more pronounced influence of individualism, innovation, and globalization, while the 1700-1900 period was marked by different cultural dynamics. The role of elite youth culture, fashion, and mass media in driving cultural change highlights the evolving nature of society and its cultural expressions.
