Lunar crater named after Artemis commander's deceased wife

On Monday, astronauts aboard the Artemis mission experienced a poignant moment as they proposed naming a lunar crater in honor of the late wife of mission commander Reid Wiseman. This gesture, made at the outer edge of human space travel, underscored the personal and emotional dimensions of space exploration.

Reid Wiseman, a seasoned astronaut with extensive experience in space, is leading the Artemis mission, which marks a significant step in humanity's return to the Moon. The crew, consisting of astronauts from different countries, is working together to explore the lunar surface and gather valuable scientific data. As they ventured into the vast expanse of the Moon's surface, the astronauts encountered a crater that would become a symbol of their mission's emotional depth.

The decision to name the crater was not made lightly. It was a collective effort by the crew, who recognized the importance of honoring a significant figure in their mission commander's life. The late wife of Reid Wiseman, whose name was not disclosed, played a crucial role in his personal and professional journey. Her support and encouragement were instrumental in Wiseman's career as an astronaut, and her memory continues to inspire him and the team.

The naming ceremony, conducted in a private moment on the lunar surface, was a heartfelt tribute. The astronauts explained that the crater, with its rugged terrain and stark beauty, seemed an appropriate place to commemorate someone who had left an indelible mark on their lives. The choice of a lunar crater, a place far removed from Earth, symbolized the enduring nature of their connection and the transcendence of human emotions in the face of the cosmos.

The Artemis mission, which is part of NASA's broader Artemis program, aims to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon and pave the way for future missions to Mars. By naming a lunar feature after a loved one, the crew highlighted the intertwined nature of personal and professional lives in the pursuit of space exploration. This act of remembrance also served as a reminder of the sacrifices and emotional challenges faced by those who dedicate their lives to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.

The news of the crater's naming has been met with widespread appreciation and understanding. Space enthusiasts and the general public have expressed their support for the crew's decision, viewing it as a poignant and meaningful gesture. It has also sparked discussions about the role of personal stories in space exploration, emphasizing that the individuals behind the missions are not just professionals but also have deep emotional ties to their work.

In an era where space exploration is increasingly seen as a collaborative effort, the Artemis crew's decision to honor a personal loss on the lunar surface underscores the universal nature of human experience. It serves as a poignant reminder that even in the vast silence of space, the bonds we form on Earth continue to resonate and inspire us. The crater, now bearing the name of the late wife of Reid Wiseman, will stand as a testament to the enduring power of love and the emotional depth of human endeavor in the cosmos.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

Context Engineering for Coding Agents
The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit. Powerful context engineering is becoming a huge part of the developer experience of these tools. Birgitta Böckeler explains the current state of context configuration features, using Claude Code as an example. moreтАж

Does feeding less protein to cows over a longer period not only reduce nitrogen losses, but also affect methane emissions?
