Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Appointed India's Next Army Chief
The Indian government appoints Lt General Dhiraj Seth, currently Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff. He will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi upon retirement. A profile of the incoming army chief.

New Delhi, June 13 โ The Indian government has appointed Lt General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff, placing the current Vice Chief of the Army Staff in line to succeed General Upendra Dwivedi upon his retirement. The decision, announced on Saturday, sets the stage for a leadership transition at a time when the Indian Army faces complex security challenges along its northern and western borders.
Lt Gen Seth, an officer with extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations and conventional warfare, will take charge of an army that is modernising its equipment and doctrine while managing persistent tensions with China and Pakistan. His elevation comes after a career spanning nearly four decades, during which he has commanded troops in some of the most demanding theatres. Born into a military family, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Rajput Regiment in 1987.
Over the years, he has held a series of key command and staff appointments, including command of an infantry brigade in Jammu and Kashmir, a division in the desert sector, and a corps in the eastern theatre. He also served as the Director General of Military Operations at army headquarters, a role that placed him at the centre of strategic planning. His tenure as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, which began in 2024, saw him oversee the army's day-to-day operations and coordinate with the other services on jointness and integration.
Military analysts note that his experience in the Military Operations directorate gives him a deep understanding of the operational dynamics along the Line of Actual Control with China and the Line of Control with Pakistan. Lt Gen Seth is also known for his focus on modernisation and technology adoption. He has been a proponent of integrating drones, artificial intelligence, and cyber capabilities into conventional military operations. Under his leadership, the army has accelerated trials of indigenous equipment as part of the government's push for self-reliance in defence production.
The outgoing chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, who took over in June 2024, is retiring after a tenure marked by the ongoing standoff with China in eastern Ladakh and the army's response to increased cross-border infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir. General Dwivedi's term saw the army complete the raising of new infantry battalions and the induction of advanced artillery systems. The transition comes at a critical juncture. The Indian Army is in the midst of a long-term restructuring aimed at making it more agile and lethal.
The appointment of Lt Gen Seth, who has been closely involved in these reforms as vice chief, signals continuity in the army's strategic direction. His understanding of both the operational and bureaucratic dimensions of the service is expected to smooth the handover. Lt Gen Seth's appointment also reflects the government's preference for officers with recent experience in the Military Operations directorate, a pattern seen in several previous appointments. The army chief serves as the principal military adviser to the government on land warfare matters and represents the service in the Chiefs of Staff Committee.
Outside his professional duties, Lt Gen Seth is known as an avid reader of military history and has written articles on leadership and strategy. He is married and has two children. His family has a long tradition of service, with his father having served in the Indian Army. As he prepares to assume the top post, Lt Gen Seth will inherit an army that is simultaneously managing active border tensions, pursuing internal security operations, and undergoing a generational shift in its equipment and personnel.
His immediate priorities are expected to include consolidating the gains made in the eastern Ladakh sector and ensuring the army's readiness for any contingency. The formal change of command will take place on a date to be announced, following General Dwivedi's retirement. Until then, Lt Gen Seth continues as Vice Chief, overseeing the transition.
