Let's Talk About The American Dream

A few months ago, I wrote about the concept of "staying gold," which refers to holding onto the best parts of ourselves, our communities, and the American Dream. However, staying gold isn't a passive process; it requires effort, action, and difficult conversations that challenge us to confront our past, present, and future. This is why I am honored to join Alexander Vindman in giving a talk at the historic Cooper Union Great Hall in just 14 days.

Alexander Vindman's life is a testament to the American Dream's power. Born in the Soviet Union, he immigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in Brooklyn before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Over the next 21 years, he served with distinction, earning a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Iraq and eventually becoming the Director of European Affairs for the National Security Council. When faced with the choice between turning a blind eye or upholding the values he swore to protect, Vindman chose integrity over career advancement. His decision cost him his position but never his principles.

The American Dream, at its core, is the promise that hard work, fairness, and opportunity can lead to a better future. However, in 2025, this promise feels more like a question: How can we build on our dream so that it works for everyone? Alexander Vindman and I will explore this in our joint talk, focusing on democracy, community, and economic mobility.

We come from very different backgrounds. Vindman has lived multiple lifetimes as a soldier and diplomat, while I have spent years building internet-based communities and platforms like Stack Overflow and Discourse. I have also written extensively about online interactions, community dynamics, and the challenges of creating meaningful connections in the digital age.

Despite these differences, we share a strong belief that everyone's American Dream is worth fighting for. Vindman's life demonstrates the transformative power of opportunity and the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. My work highlights the potential of technology to connect people and foster community, but also the need for intentional effort to create inclusive and equitable spaces.

In our talk, we will delve into the challenges facing the American Dream in the 21st century. We will discuss how democracy can be strengthened to ensure that all voices are heard and how communities can be built on principles of fairness and inclusion. Additionally, we will examine the role of economic mobility in realizing the promise of the American Dream for everyone, not just a select few.

The American Dream has always been a beacon of hope, a vision of a future where hard work and determination can lead to success. However, to make this dream a reality for all, we must confront the obstacles that stand in the way and work together to create a more equitable and inclusive society. Through the lens of democracy, community, and economic mobility, Alexander Vindman and I will explore how we can build on this dream to ensure it works for everyone.

Our conversation will be a call to action, urging listeners to engage in the difficult conversations necessary to address the challenges of our time. By staying true to the values of the American Dream—hard work, fairness, and opportunity—we can create a future where everyone has the chance to thrive.
