ITTF World Cup: Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi-kem ousted by China’s Wang Yidi in ‘wonderful match’

Hong Kong’s top women’s table tennis player, Doo Hoi-kem, was stunned by China’s Wang Yidi in a dramatic group-stage match at the ITTF World Cup in Macau on Wednesday. The loss, which saw Doo exit the tournament with a 3-1 defeat, marked the end of Hong Kong’s participation in the prestigious event. This defeat came just a day after teammate Lam Siu-hang also suffered an unexpected exit, finishing second in his group and missing out on the knockout stages.

The match between Doo and Wang was described as a "wonderful match" by spectators and commentators alike, showcasing the high level of skill and competitive spirit present at the tournament. Doo, known for her aggressive playing style and powerful serves, struggled to find her rhythm against Wang’s tactical approach. The first set was closely contested, with Wang edging out Doo 11-8. However, Doo fought back in the second set, winning 11-8 to level the match.

The third set saw Wang regain her composure, demonstrating her experience and adaptability. She won the set 11-8, putting pressure on Doo to win the final set. Unfortunately for the Hong Kong player, Wang closed out the match with a dominant 11-4 win, securing her position at the top of the group. Doo’s final group stage record was one win and one loss, placing her second in the group and denying her a spot in the 16-player knockout stage.

Doo’s exit from the tournament was a significant blow to Hong Kong’s hopes of securing a strong performance at the ITTF World Cup. Both Doo and Lam had been considered key players for their country, with high expectations placed on them to advance beyond the group stages. Their performances, however, were overshadowed by the strong performances of their Chinese opponents.

Wang Yidi, on the other hand, emerged from the match as a formidable force, showcasing her ability to adapt to different playing styles and maintain her composure under pressure. Her victory over Doo highlighted her potential to challenge for a top finish in the tournament.

The ITTF World Cup, held in Macau, is one of the most prestigious table tennis events in the world, attracting the best players from around the globe. The tournament is not only a showcase of individual talent but also a platform for national teams to compete and gain valuable experience. Hong Kong’s early exit from the tournament will undoubtedly be a cause for reflection for the team’s management and coaches, as they look to improve their performance in future competitions.

In the meantime, the focus will shift to the remaining players in the tournament, who will be vying for the coveted title. The knockout stages will undoubtedly feature some thrilling matches, as the best 16 players battle it out for the ultimate prize. For Hong Kong, however, the ITTF World Cup has ended on a disappointing note, with both Doo Hoi-kem and Lam Siu-hang failing to advance beyond the group stages. The lessons learned from this tournament will be crucial in shaping the team’s strategy and preparation for future international events.

Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3 is now available. CLJ-2843 - Reflective calls to Java methods that take primitive long or double now work when passed a narrower boxed number at runtime (Integer, Short, Byte, Float). Previously, these methods were not matched during reflection and an error was thrown. Java 21 added an overload to the method Thread/sleep in the 1-arity. When upgrading to Java 21, existing Clojure calls to Thread/sleep become reflective, but continue to work. As usual, you can detect reflection with *warn-on-reflection* and address with a type hint (here, ^long ) to choose the desired overload. Previously, passing a Short or Integer value to a reflective call like Thread/sleep that takes a long would not match, that has been corrected.
