Is it okay to eat standing up? A doctor weighs in.

In the fast-paced world we live in, grabbing a quick meal on the go has become a common practice. Whether it's breakfast over the sink or lunch at the counter, many of us eat standing up, often without giving it a second thought. But is this habit really harmless, or could it be contributing to digestive issues? To answer this question, we turned to Dr. Carolyn Newberry, a gastroenterologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Digestion is fundamentally a process that relies on gravity. Whether you're sitting down or standing up, the key is to ensure you're eating upright. The biggest concern with eating in an upright position is not the position itself, but rather the reasons why people often eat standing up. The primary issue arises when individuals eat in a hurry, which can lead to a range of digestive problems.

Dr. Newberry explains that a common trigger for heartburn symptoms is eating and then lying down immediately afterward. When stomach acid is secreted and mixed with food, it can regurgitate back up if gravity isn't helping it move downward properly. This is why it's generally advised against eating right before bed, as it takes about two hours or more for food to move from the stomach to the intestines.

While eating standing up might not be significantly different from eating sitting down in terms of gravity, the major drawback lies in the fact that people tend to eat standing up because they're in a hurry. Eating in a rush can cause bloating, upset stomach, and overeating. Unintentionally swallowing excess air and not chewing food sufficiently can put a strain on the digestive system.

Our bodies work most efficiently during digestion when we're in a leisurely state. Dr. Newberry emphasizes the importance of taking one's time while eating meals. By slowing down and paying attention to the food, we can ensure proper digestion and reduce the risk of indigestion.

In conclusion, while it's not inherently bad to eat standing up, the real issue often stems from the rushed nature of these meals. By prioritizing a slower, more mindful approach to eating, we can promote better digestion and overall health. So, the next time you find yourself grabbing a quick bite on the go, consider taking a moment to sit down and savor your meal. Your gut (and your parents) might thank you.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit. Does feeding less protein to cows over a longer period not only reduce nitrogen losses, but also affect methane emissions?
