Independent Voices, Independent Momentum: A Conversation With IPSA’s Incoming President

As Aaron Conaway prepares to take the reins of the Independent Professional Seed Association (IPSA) in January, he brings a unique perspective to the role. Conaway’s journey from a student of aeronautical technology to the founder of Total Seed Production (TSP) is a testament to the power of adaptability and resilience in the seed industry. In this candid conversation, Conaway reflects on his experiences, the challenges faced by independent seed companies, and his vision for IPSA’s future.

Conaway’s path to the seed industry was far from conventional. Born and raised in Tipton, Indiana, he had no agricultural background and initially pursued a career in aviation. However, the events of September 11, 2001, disrupted the aviation industry, leading Conaway to reevaluate his future. Along with his then-girlfriend, he decided to stay in his hometown, but the limited opportunities in aviation forced him to consider alternative career paths. This is where his father-in-law, who owned a seed company founded in 1936, stepped in. The elder Campbell offered Conaway a chance to join the family business, starting from the bottom.

“I came in sweeping floors, bagging corn, learning from the bottom,” Conaway recalls. “It was a steep learning curve, but it taught me the value of hard work and the importance of understanding every aspect of the business.” Over the next three years, Conaway rose through the ranks, gaining invaluable experience in the seed industry.

In 2006, a wave of consolidation swept through the industry, prompting the Campbell family to sell their retail brand and focus on production. This decision presented Conaway with a clear opportunity to understand the role of independent seed companies. “After managing the transition, watching Monsanto purchase brands and seeing where we fit, I understood how important independent production was,” he says. This realization led to the creation of Total Seed Production (TSP) in 2006, a company that would go on to triple its business within just five years.

As IPSA’s incoming president, Conaway brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by independent seed companies. He emphasizes the importance of agility and adaptability in an industry that is constantly evolving. “Independent companies have the flexibility to respond quickly to market changes and customer needs,” he explains. “This agility is their greatest strength, and it’s what keeps them relevant in an industry dominated by large conglomerates.”

Conaway’s vision for IPSA centers on fostering growth and collaboration among its members. He believes that the association can play a pivotal role in supporting independent seed companies by providing resources, networking opportunities, and a platform for sharing best practices. “IPSA has the potential to be a powerful force for the independent seed industry,” he says. “By leveraging our collective strengths and supporting one another, we can ensure that independent voices continue to be heard and valued in the seed industry.”

One of the key challenges IPSA will face under Conaway’s leadership is balancing the needs of its diverse membership. The association represents a wide range of independent seed companies, from small-scale producers to larger operations. Conaway acknowledges this diversity and sees it as an opportunity for collaboration and mutual support. “Our strength lies in our unity,” he says. “By working together, we can address common challenges and seize new opportunities that would be difficult to achieve individually.”

In addition to growth and collaboration, Conaway also highlights the importance of innovation and sustainability in the seed industry. He believes that independent companies must embrace new technologies and practices to remain competitive. “The seed industry is constantly evolving, and those who fail to adapt will be left behind,” he warns. “IPSA can help drive this innovation by promoting research and development, and by connecting members with cutting-edge technologies and solutions.”

As Conaway steps into the IPSA presidency, he is eager to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors and to further strengthen the association’s role in the seed industry. He envisions a future where independent seed companies continue to thrive by embracing agility, collaboration, and innovation. “The seed industry will always have a place for independent voices, as long as we are willing to adapt and evolve,” he concludes. “And that’s the vision I hope to bring to IPSA in the years to come.”

In this candid conversation, Aaron Conaway shares his insights into the seed industry, the challenges faced by independent companies, and his vision for IPSA’s future. His journey from a student of aeronautics to the founder of Total Seed Production is a testament to the power of adaptability and resilience. As IPSA’s incoming president, Conaway brings a unique perspective and a clear vision for growth, collaboration, and innovation. The future of the independent seed industry looks bright under his leadership, as he works to ensure that independent voices continue to be heard and valued in an ever-changing market landscape.
