In defense of screen time

My daughter is constantly creating– her passions include making art, writing fiction, coding interactive games, and composing music. Yet, I regularly see news articles and media pundits suggesting that my husband and I are doing things all wrong. The reason for these claims? My daughter uses screen-based tools, at least partially, and in some cases, entirely, to pursue the interests I listed in my first sentence. To give more detail on how she pursues her passions:

In defense of screen time

In recent years, the debate surrounding screen time has intensified, with many experts and media outlets warning about the potential negative impacts of excessive screen usage on children and adolescents. However, the story of my daughter, who thrives on creating through screen-based tools, challenges these narratives and highlights the diverse ways technology can foster creativity and learning.

My daughter's passions are varied and include art, writing, coding, and music. While these interests might seem unrelated, they all intersect in her ability to harness the power of technology to express herself and explore new ideas. For instance, she uses digital art software to create vibrant paintings and animations, a writing app to draft her fiction stories, coding platforms to build interactive games, and music production software to compose original tunes.

Critics often argue that relying on screens can detract from traditional, hands-on activities and limit a child's ability to engage with the world around them. However, my daughter's experience demonstrates that screen-based tools can serve as powerful extensions of her creativity rather than replacements for real-world experiences. She often incorporates elements from her physical surroundings into her digital creations, blending the two worlds seamlessly.

Moreover, the accessibility and affordability of screen-based tools have made it possible for my daughter to pursue her passions with ease. Digital platforms offer a wealth of resources, tutorials, and communities that support and inspire her creative endeavors. These tools provide immediate feedback and allow her to experiment with different techniques and styles without the constraints of traditional materials or limitations of time.

Furthermore, the collaborative nature of many screen-based creative tools has enriched my daughter's social and emotional development. She collaborates with peers from around the world through online platforms, fostering communication skills, empathy, and a global perspective. These interactions have expanded her understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives, enriching her creative output.

It is also important to consider the potential for screen-based learning and development. Many educational resources and tools are available online, enabling my daughter to delve deeper into her interests and acquire new skills at her own pace. She has taken online courses to enhance her coding and music production abilities, benefiting from structured learning environments that cater to her unique needs.

Despite the advantages, it is crucial to strike a balance. While screen-based tools can be invaluable for creativity and learning, it is essential to ensure that children also engage in physical activity, social interactions, and other non-screen-based activities. Encouraging a diverse range of experiences helps foster well-rounded development and prevents over-reliance on technology.

In conclusion, the debate over screen time often oversimplifies the complex relationship between technology and creativity. My daughter's story illustrates that screen-based tools can be powerful catalysts for self-expression and learning when used thoughtfully and in conjunction with other experiences. As parents and educators, it is our role to guide children in harnessing technology's potential while promoting a balanced and enriching lifestyle.
