In Conversation With: Wei Tan

In the heart of Berlin, where art and creativity thrive, we find artist Wei Tan, whose work is a captivating blend of color and form. Her mixed media paintings, filled with swathes of peach, lilac, and aquamarine, are set against the backdrop of rooms that defy traditional architecture, lacking corners or depth. At the center of these surreal spaces are chairsтАФchairs that serve as both focal points and invitations for the viewer to engage with her art.

Wei TanтАЩs fascination with chairs is not merely a casual interest; itтАЩs an obsession. As she explains, the word тАЬobsessionтАЭ has Latin roots, specifically тАЬobsidere,тАЭ which means тАЬto sit in front of.тАЭ This linguistic discovery resonates deeply with her artistic practice. Her chairs are more than mere objects; they are gateways to dreamscapes, offering a starting point for the viewer to imagine and explore.

TanтАЩs work is a testament to the power of color and form. She meticulously layers her paintings, creating a sense of depth and movement that draws the eye into her fantastical worlds. The absence of corners in her rooms suggests a break from conventional spatial understanding, inviting viewers to question their perceptions of reality. This disruption of expectations is a hallmark of TanтАЩs style, which challenges the viewer to reconsider the boundaries of what is possible in art.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, Wei TanтАЩs passions extend to music as well. She admits that she has always been drawn to both art and music, finding in them parallel expressions of creativity and emotion. This dual obsession reflects a deep-seated need to explore the interconnected realms of visual and auditory storytelling.

In her studio, surrounded by her vibrant paintings and the sounds of her favorite tunes, Tan shares insights into her creative process. She speaks of how music often serves as a muse, inspiring her to experiment with new colors and compositions. The rhythm of a song or the melody of an instrument can translate into the brushstrokes and hues that come to life on her canvas.

TanтАЩs work is a celebration of imagination and the power of art to transcend boundaries. Her chairs, suspended in rooms without corners, invite viewers to step into her dreamlike worlds and discover the beauty that lies beyond the ordinary. As she continues to explore the intersections of art and music, Wei TanтАЩs oeuvre grows richer and more diverse, offering a glimpse into the boundless realms of creativity.

In Berlin and beyond, Wei TanтАЩs art captivates audiences with its unique blend of color, form, and imagination. Her obsession with chairs, rooted in the Latin word for тАЬsitting in front of,тАЭ underscores the transformative power of art to inspire and engage. As she delves deeper into her passions for art and music, TanтАЩs work serves as a reminder of the limitless potential that exists when we allow ourselves to be fully absorbed by our obsessions.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they donтАЩt want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didnтАЩt notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didnтАЩt know why theyтАЩd just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place.
