I was an Apple guy almost from the start – here are my standout devices

I was an Apple guy almost from the start – here are my standout devices

On Apple’s 50th anniversary, it’s somewhat worrying that I’m old enough to have been an Apple guy almost from the very start. The above photo shows the OG me with the OG Macintosh in 1984. Oh, and a rotary-dial telephone just to complete the museum exhibit look. I never used an Apple I, but I did use an Apple II fairly extensively – and I’ve been a Mac guy literally from day one. So of all the Apple products I’ve used over the years, which ones stand out for me?

My relationship with Apple began in the early 1980s when I first encountered the Apple II. This machine was a revelation for me, as it offered a level of personal computing that was previously unimaginable. The Apple II’s color graphics and ability to run a variety of software made it a versatile tool for both work and play. I remember spending countless hours writing programs and playing games on this iconic machine. The Apple II was more than just a computer; it was a gateway to a new world of creativity and innovation.

However, my true love for Apple began in 1984 when the Macintosh was introduced. The Macintosh was groundbreaking for its time, with its graphical user interface (GUI) and mouse-driven operation. I vividly recall the excitement of using the Macintosh for the first time. The combination of ease of use and powerful capabilities made it an instant hit. The Macintosh not only revolutionized personal computing but also set the standard for user experience in the industry.

As an Apple enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing and using many of the company’s groundbreaking products. One of my favorite devices is the original iPod. The iPod changed the way we listen to music, making it portable and personalized. The intuitive user interface and seamless integration with iTunes made it a must-have gadget. The iPod’s success paved the way for the iPhone and iPad, further solidifying Apple’s position as a leader in the tech industry.

The iPhone, launched in 2007, was another transformative device for me. The iPhone combined the functionality of a phone, a music player, and a computer into a single, elegant device. The multi-touch screen and the App Store made it a versatile tool for communication, entertainment, and productivity. The iPhone’s impact on mobile technology is immeasurable, and it continues to influence the design and capabilities of smartphones today.

Among Apple’s more recent devices, the Apple Watch stands out. While it may not be as revolutionary as some of its predecessors, the Apple Watch has proven to be a valuable companion for fitness tracking, health monitoring, and staying connected. The watchOS platform has evolved significantly, offering a wide range of features and apps. The Apple Watch’s integration with other Apple devices, such as the iPhone and Mac, is a testament to the company’s commitment to creating a seamless ecosystem.

Looking back at my journey with Apple devices, it’s clear that the company has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation. From the Macintosh to the iPhone, each device has left a lasting impact on the technology landscape. As Apple continues to celebrate its 50th anniversary, I remain an enthusiastic supporter of the company’s vision and products. The future holds exciting possibilities for Apple and its users, and I can’t wait to see what the next 50 years will bring.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they don’t want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didn’t notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didn’t know why they’d just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place. Doors A while back, I was at Black Seed Bagel, which has a door that looks 75% like a “push” door from both sides when it’s actually a push door from the outside and
