Hyderabad: Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla inaugurated the Nivrutti De-addiction Centre at the Cherlapally Central Prison in Hyderabad on Monday. The event marked a significant step in addressing substance abuse, which the Governor identified as a serious social and public concern.
During his address to the gathering, Governor Shukla praised the Telangana government's efforts to combat substance abuse through initiatives like Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. He also commended the Telangana Prisons Department for adopting a reform-oriented approach to rehabilitate inmates.
The Nivrutti De-addiction Centre, located within the Cherlapally Central Prison, has been set up to provide treatment and counselling to inmates struggling with substance abuse. In a statement, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Soumya Mishra, revealed that 2,915 inmates have been screened for substance abuse. Out of these, 590 have undergone the World Health Organisation-Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (WHO-ASSIST) and received appropriate treatment and counselling.
In addition to the de-addiction centre, Governor Shukla also visited the Prisoner Agricultural Colony (PAC) in Cherlapalli. Here, he interacted with inmates and reviewed the agricultural and vocational programs being implemented. The Governor shared his personal experiences from his political life, where he was imprisoned several times. He noted that being in a jail environment provided him with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by both inmates and prison staff.
The inauguration of the Nivrutti De-addiction Centre at the Cherlapally Central Prison highlights the government's commitment to addressing substance abuse within the prison system. By providing treatment and rehabilitation to inmates, the state government aims to reduce the prevalence of substance abuse and promote a healthier society.
