How TIME and Statista Determined the World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2025

In an era marked by escalating environmental challenges and deepening social inequalities, the collaboration between TIME and Statista has culminated in the identification of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2025. This initiative aims to spotlight corporate responsibility and promote sustainable practices, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and rewarding companies that prioritize sustainability. By featuring these leading entities, the ranking sets a benchmark for other businesses, fostering transparency and accountability and encouraging the integration of sustainability into core corporate strategies.

The process of determining the most sustainable companies began with a comprehensive selection from over 5,000 of the world’s largest and most influential companies, considering factors such as revenue, market capitalization, and public prominence. A rigorous 4-step methodology was employed to identify the top 500 companies, evaluated on more than 20 key data points.

The first step involved excluding companies involved in non-sustainable industries, such as fossil fuels or deforestation. Additionally, companies appearing on negative lists related to sustainability issues, such as those identified as carbon majors or associated with environmental catastrophes, were automatically disqualified. These lists included the Forest 500 Report (based on 2023 data), Carbon Majors (based on 2023 data), and the PERI Top 100 Polluter Indexes: Air, Water, Greenhouse, Toxic Greenhouse, Suppliers, Coal (based on 2022 data). This step also considered significant scandals or controversies related to sustainability, ensuring that only companies with a clear commitment to sustainability progressed to the next stage.

The second step focused on assessing companies based on external sustainability ratings and commitments from reputable organizations. Key criteria included CDP ratings, adherence to the UN Global Compact, alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (near-term and long-term), inclusion in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook, and participation in the UNFCCC Climate Action Summits. These assessments provided a comprehensive evaluation of each company’s sustainability efforts and commitment to global sustainability goals.

The third step involved analyzing the companies’ sustainability reports and disclosures. These reports were scrutinized to ensure that the companies were transparent about their sustainability practices, including their carbon footprint, water usage, waste management, and social impact. The analysis also considered the companies’ strategies for reducing their environmental impact and improving their social responsibility.

The final step involved evaluating the companies’ long-term sustainability strategies and their potential to drive positive change in their industries. This assessment took into account the companies’ investments in sustainable technologies, partnerships with other sustainable businesses, and their ability to influence broader industry standards.

The resulting list of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2025 highlights companies that have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and a clear path forward for driving positive change. By showcasing these leaders, the ranking aims to inspire other businesses to prioritize sustainability and contribute to a more sustainable future for all.

In conclusion, the collaboration between TIME and Statista has produced a comprehensive and rigorous ranking of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2025. This initiative not only recognizes the efforts of companies that are already leading the way in sustainability but also sets a benchmark for others to follow. As the world faces mounting environmental and social challenges, the integration of sustainability into corporate strategies is more critical than ever. By highlighting the successes of these sustainable companies, the ranking encourages transparency, accountability, and a shared commitment to a more sustainable future.

Who’s to blame if you were served a greasy cup of “soapy soup” in a tapsilog joint? Is it the dishwasher who treats the grease like a decorative fixture? The waiter who delivered it with a straight face? The chef who doesn’t care? Or the manager who’s watching a YouTube video while on duty?
