As fertiliser prices continue to rise due to unrest in the Middle East, farmers are increasingly turning to alternative methods to reduce their input costs. One such solution that has gained traction in recent years is the use of LimeX, a product that helps farmers improve soil health and productivity without the high costs associated with traditional fertilizers.
Last year, Tim Boxall, a spraying and spreading specialist at T.D. Boxall Ltd in Kent, made the decision to adopt LimeX as an alternative to conventional fertilizers. At a time when many of his customers were hesitant to invest in fertilizers, Tim recognized the potential benefits of using LimeX to neutralize soil pH and enhance soil fertility.
Tim, who has operated his business for over 40 years, primarily relies on bulk-delivered products, including fertilizers like Fibrophos and local quarry lime. However, over the past year, his business has witnessed a significant increase in demand for lime to adjust soil pH across his clients' farms. "As a contractor, we're seeing farmers using more lime, particularly last year," Tim explains. "There was a lot more liming going on because I think people didn't want to spend the money on fertilizer, so they wanted to bring up their soil pHs to release what was available in the soil."
The challenge of sourcing sufficient lime led Tim's company to explore alternative options, ultimately leading them to LimeX. "We found it a challenge to get as much lime as possible, which is why we moved into LimeX to fill the gap and the supply issues, as it was more readily available," Tim says.
Despite being based in an area outside the sugar beet growing region, Tim has had a smooth and efficient experience sourcing LimeX from British Sugar. "Getting LimeX from British Sugar has been absolutely no problem at all," he says. "It's no different from us sourcing fertilizers from further afield. Transport has been good, prices have been competitive compared to local quarries, and we've been able to maintain a supply of product. That's a big issue for us."
Not only has the sourcing process been reliable, but the product has also received strong feedback from Tim's farmers. "We've got one repeat customer this spring, mainly from a supply issue point of view, but also the consistency of the product," he says. "It spreads well as a smaller particle and increases the pH rapidly."
Emily Whitmarsh, LimeX technical sales manager, confirms that the product is available nationwide and reassures customers of its consistent quality. "LimeX is a reliable and efficient solution for farmers looking to improve their soil health without the high costs of traditional fertilizers," she says. "Its widespread availability and competitive pricing make it an attractive alternative, especially in times of fluctuating fertilizer prices."
In conclusion, the rising costs of fertilizers have prompted farmers to explore alternative methods for improving soil fertility and productivity. LimeX has emerged as a viable solution, offering a cost-effective and efficient way to neutralize soil pH and enhance soil health. With its reliable supply chain, competitive pricing, and proven effectiveness, LimeX is set to play an increasingly important role in helping farmers manage their input costs in the face of global market uncertainties.
