Hong Kong’s youth teams sweep junior lacrosse titles, as event eyes 2028 Olympics

In a remarkable display of resilience and skill, Hong Kong’s youth lacrosse teams emerged triumphant at the Hong Kong Lacrosse Junior Open on Sunday, despite facing torrential rain and challenging weather conditions. The event, which took place in Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang, saw the city’s teams secure five titles and one third-place finish, showcasing their talent and determination in the face of adversity.

The junior open, which attracted strong opposition from teams across the region, was marred by multiple suspensions due to thunderstorm warnings and a yellow rain signal during the afternoon finals. However, this did not dampen the spirits of the young athletes, who appeared even more excited as they celebrated their victories.

Hong Kong claimed championships in the under-8 and under-10 mixed competitions, demonstrating the city’s prowess in nurturing young talent from an early age. The under-12 girls’ team also performed exceptionally well, securing the title in their category. Additionally, Hong Kong’s teams claimed both the under-14 and under-16 boys’ championships, further solidifying their dominance in the junior lacrosse scene.

The success of Hong Kong’s youth teams at the junior open is particularly significant in the context of the city’s bid to host the 2028 Olympics. Lacrosse, a sport that has been gaining popularity in Asia, is one of the contenders for inclusion in the Olympic program. By showcasing the talent and potential of its young athletes, Hong Kong is positioning itself as a strong candidate to feature lacrosse in the 2028 games.

The junior open also served as an opportunity for the city to promote lacrosse and encourage more young people to take up the sport. The event attracted a large crowd, with families and spectators braving the rain to watch the thrilling matches. The presence of such a vibrant audience highlights the growing interest in lacrosse within Hong Kong and the potential for the sport to continue its ascent in the region.

The performance of Hong Kong’s youth teams at the junior open is a testament to the hard work and dedication of coaches, players, and supporters. It also underscores the importance of investing in sports development and providing young athletes with the opportunity to compete at a high level. As Hong Kong looks towards the 2028 Olympics, the success of its junior lacrosse teams serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, demonstrating the city’s potential to excel on the global stage.

In conclusion, the Hong Kong Lacrosse Junior Open was a resounding success, with the city’s youth teams proving their mettle in challenging weather conditions. Their victories not only highlight their exceptional skills but also reinforce Hong Kong’s aspirations to host the 2028 Olympics and showcase the sport of lacrosse on the world stage. As the city continues to nurture its young talents, the future of lacrosse in Hong Kong looks bright and promising.

Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3 is now available. CLJ-2843 - Reflective calls to Java methods that take primitive long or double now work when passed a narrower boxed number at runtime (Integer, Short, Byte, Float). Previously, these methods were not matched during reflection and an error was thrown. Java 21 added an overload to the method Thread/sleep in the 1-arity. When upgrading to Java 21, existing Clojure calls to Thread/sleep become reflective, but continue to work. As usual, you can detect reflection with *warn-on-reflection* and address with a type hint (here, ^long ) to choose the desired overload. Previously, passing a Short or Integer value to a reflective call like Thread/sleep that takes a long would not match, that has been corrected.
