Hong Kong’s ice hockey players have the talent to succeed but lack the platform to showcase their skills to the wider world, and that is something the sport’s top local official plans to change. Bringing three world championships to the city is just the start of that movement, with Sherman Chan Yan-wing, chairman of the Hong Kong, China Ice Hockey Association, also hoping to convince the government to put a comprehensive development plan for the sport in place. With the goal of having a competitive national team, Chan is determined to elevate the profile of ice hockey in the region.

Chan’s ambition stems from a belief in the potential of Hong Kong’s athletes. He has witnessed firsthand the dedication and skill of the players, who have been training diligently despite the challenges posed by the sport’s limited infrastructure. The city’s limited number of ice rinks and the lack of a structured development program have hindered progress, but Chan is optimistic that this can change.

The first major step in this plan is the hosting of three international ice hockey championships in Hong Kong. These events will not only provide a platform for local players to compete against some of the world’s best but will also attract international attention to the sport. By showcasing the talent of Hong Kong’s athletes, Chan hopes to generate interest and support from both the government and private sectors.

In addition to the championships, Chan is advocating for a government-backed development plan. This would involve expanding the number of ice rinks, establishing youth programs, and providing financial support for coaching and equipment. Such a plan would help nurture the next generation of ice hockey talent and create a sustainable ecosystem for the sport.

However, Chan acknowledges that the journey will not be easy. The sport of ice hockey is not traditionally popular in Hong Kong, and there are significant logistical challenges to overcome. The city’s climate, with its high humidity and temperatures, makes maintaining an ice rink difficult and expensive. Chan is working to address these issues, exploring innovative solutions such as using refrigerated containers for temporary rinks during championship events.

Despite these obstacles, Chan remains committed to his vision. He believes that with the right support and investment, Hong Kong can become a formidable force in international ice hockey. The success of the upcoming championships will be crucial in demonstrating the feasibility of this plan and garnering further backing.

The potential rewards are significant. A thriving ice hockey program could boost the city’s sports tourism industry, create jobs, and inspire a new generation of athletes. Moreover, it could foster a sense of national pride and unity, as Hong Kong’s ice hockey team competes on the global stage.

As Chan works to bring his vision to life, he is not alone. Local ice hockey enthusiasts, players, and coaches are rallying behind him, eager to see the sport grow. Their passion and determination are key to the success of this ambitious project.

In the coming years, Hong Kong’s ice hockey journey will be a testament to perseverance and the power of belief in potential. With Chan at the helm, the sport is poised for a transformative era, one that could see Hong Kong’s players taking on the world with renewed confidence and a newfound platform to shine.

Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3 is now available. CLJ-2843 - Reflective calls to Java methods that take primitive long or double now work when passed a narrower boxed number at runtime (Integer, Short, Byte, Float). Previously, these methods were not matched during reflection and an error was thrown. Java 21 added an overload to the method Thread/sleep in the 1-arity. When upgrading to Java 21, existing Clojure calls to Thread/sleep become reflective, but continue to work. As usual, you can detect reflection with *warn-on-reflection* and address with a type hint (here, ^long ) to choose the desired overload. Previously, passing a Short or Integer value to a reflective call like Thread/sleep that takes a long would not match, that has been corrected.
