The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has initiated a comprehensive drive to curb the use of illegal water pumps attached to household taps in the city. This move comes as the board aims to address the issue of low water pressure in certain areas, which has been linked to the misuse of water by some residents.
According to HMWSSB, individuals found using illegal water pumps will face a penalty of Rs 5,000, and the equipment will be confiscated. The board has prepared a region-wise action plan, targeting the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri zones for the drive. Officials from the board will conduct ground-level investigations during regular water supply hours to monitor water pressure levels from connection to connection and identify any instances of illegal motors being used.
HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy emphasized the importance of equitable distribution of water, which is transported from distant sources at significant cost. He warned that strict action would be taken against those found attaching motors to pipelines, reiterating that ensuring equal access to drinking water is the board's top priority.
The drive is expected to continue throughout the summer season, a time when water demand is at its peak. By targeting illegal pumps, HMWSSB hopes to improve water pressure and ensure that the water supply remains consistent for all residents.
This initiative highlights the board's commitment to addressing water-related issues in the city, particularly in the context of growing water scarcity and the need for sustainable water management practices. As the drive progresses, HMWSSB will continue to monitor and enforce its policies to maintain the integrity of the city's water supply system.
