HKFP Lens: Roman Olinchuk’s cinematic portraits of Hong Kong

Ukrainian-born Hong Kong photographer Roman Olinchuk has made a name for himself by transforming ordinary locations into cinematic portraits. His work, which draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, captures the essence of Hong Kong's unique urban landscape. Olinchuk's journey as an artist began with a keen interest in cinema, the work of other photographers and artists, and even video games with striking visual styles. He believes that inspiration can come in any form and at any time, from visiting a location to a quote from a movie, or even the color of a pomegranate.

Olinchuk's approach to photography is one of constant exploration and discovery. He scouts out hidden gems across Hong Kong, often finding inspiration in the most unexpected places. "It feels a bit like finding treasure," he says. "Maybe a quiet, unremarkable neighborhood has a rusty playground, or a parking lot with a view of Lion Rock. You never know." His ability to see the cinematic potential in ordinary settings is what sets his work apart.

The photographer's process is deeply personal and creative. He emphasizes the importance of the creative process itself, stating, "I will climb that mountain, I will pour black slimy liquid over my face, I will gather everyone I can to make an idea REAL. Because the point is in the process of creation." Olinchuk's dedication to creating authentic, organic pieces of art is evident in his work.

Despite the advancements in technology, Olinchuk maintains a love-hate relationship with AI. While he acknowledges the utility of AI for minimal editing tasks, such as removing objects or expanding images, he firmly believes in the value of organic creation. He sees AI as a tool rather than a threat, but he remains committed to his own creative process.

Olinchuk's passion for capturing the essence of Hong Kong through his lens is not limited to his photography. He is an active participant in the local art community, sharing his work and insights with others. This Saturday, he will be speaking about his work in Wong Chuk Hang, offering a unique opportunity for audiences to learn more about his creative journey and inspiration.

For those interested in exploring Olinchuk's work further, his Instagram account and portfolio serve as excellent starting points. His photographs not only showcase his talent but also provide a glimpse into the vibrant and diverse world of Hong Kong. Through his cinematic portraits, Roman Olinchuk continues to transform ordinary locations into extraordinary visual experiences, leaving a lasting impression on those who encounter his art.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they don’t want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didn’t notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didn’t know why they’d just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place. Doors A while back, I was at Black Seed Bagel, which has a door that looks 75% like a “push” door from both sides when it’s actually a push door from the outside and
