Hi readers,
As we head into 2024, it's time for a quick update on various links, books, a brief life update, and other happenings. First and foremost, I must acknowledge that I didn't write much in 2023—I was simply too busy! However, I am proud of the content I managed to publish. Here's a rundown of some of my blog posts from last year.
One of my articles, "How to design a referral program," offers a framework for thinking about referrals as an ask/target/incentive/payback. I delve into the components of each element and emphasize the importance of considering how often you ask for referrals, a point that many overlook. I also discuss the limitations of referral programs compared to products that are inherently viral. This post was particularly meaningful to me because I had previously headed up Uber's driver and rider referral programs at various stages of my time there.
Another notable piece from 2023 was the pitch deck for the a16z GAMES FUND ONE. As you might know, my primary focus these days is starting up and leading the new Games fund at Andreessen Horowitz. This venture is what I'll blame for not writing as frequently as I would have liked! Nevertheless, I was able to publish the vast majority of our pitch deck for the fund, which launched in mid-2022. This deck is an interesting example of a pitch deck for a fund, as opposed to a typical startup presentation.
In addition to these articles, I also wrote about "What to do when product growth stalls." With many companies facing reduced marketing and growth spending, and users becoming less engaged, founders and their teams often turn to me for guidance. In this piece, I provide a framework to help diagnose the core issue and determine the next steps.
I also introduced the "The Next Next Job" framework for making significant career decisions. This framework, which I borrowed from my friend Bubba Murarka, encourages individuals to think about their next next job rather than just focusing on the immediate opportunities. I used this approach when I transitioned from Uber to a16z, planning for a venture capital career that spanned five years ahead.
Lastly, I explored the "Creator Economy 2.0: What we’ve learned, why it’s hard, and what’s next." This article reflects on the challenges and opportunities within the creator economy landscape, offering insights into its future trajectory.
In summary, 2023 was a year of intensive work and professional growth, particularly in my role as the leader of the new Games fund at Andreessen Horowitz. Despite the busy schedule, I managed to publish several articles that I am proud of, each offering valuable insights and frameworks for various aspects of business and career development. As we move into 2024, I look forward to sharing more updates, links, and content with you all.
Stay tuned for more!
