Grok Is Gaining on ChatGPT and Gemini. How It Got There Isn’t Pretty.

Elon Musk's chatbot, Grok, is rapidly gaining traction in the AI market, surpassing expectations and posing a significant challenge to established players like ChatGPT and Gemini. The rise of Grok from a mere 1.6% market share in January 2025 to 15.2% in January 2026 among daily U.S. users of chatbot apps is a testament to its aggressive entry into the competitive landscape. xAI, Musk's AI company, joined the fray in mid-2023 and has since made a name for itself, overtaking Copilot, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Claude in the process.

However, Grok's meteoric climb is not without controversy. The app experienced a significant spike in downloads at the beginning of 2026, coinciding with news that it could generate undressed images of people, including minors, upon request. This revelation led to a surge in daily downloads from around 500,000 in late December to nearly 1 million in early January, directly correlating with Grok's jump in market share from 12.0% to 15.2% between December 2025 and January 2026.

The demographics of Grok's user base reveal a striking trend. According to Apptopia, over the past six months, 82% of Grok's weekly active users have been male. In comparison, males make up 49.9% of ChatGPT's user base, 45% of Gemini's, and 77.8% of Claude's. This skewed audience has driven Grok to develop features tailored to its predominantly male user base, including an anime AI companion that, with some encouragement, can engage users in sexual fantasies. Musk himself has contributed to this narrative, sharing a Grok-generated video of a woman saying, "I will always love you."

The Washington Post recently shed light on the internal workings of xAI, revealing that some employees signed waivers acknowledging their exposure to "sensitive, violent, sexual, and/or other offensive or disturbing content." These employees then reviewed sexual conversations users had with Grok and worked to train the bot on such situations. This approach to adult companionship with AI bots appears to be a strategic engagement driver within the AI industry.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is also reportedly exploring ways to monetize adult content interactions with its AI models. The push for growth in the AI chatbot market has led companies to prioritize user engagement, even if it means navigating sensitive and controversial territory.

As Grok continues to climb the ranks, the question of whether this trajectory is sustainable remains unanswered. The ethical implications of generating undressed images, particularly of minors, have raised concerns about the direction of AI development and its potential impact on society. Meanwhile, the dominance of male users in Grok's user base highlights broader issues of inclusivity and representation in the AI industry.

Despite the controversies, Grok's rapid ascent underscores the potential of AI chatbots to shape the future of communication and interaction. As companies like xAI and OpenAI continue to innovate, it will be crucial for the industry to balance user engagement with ethical considerations and inclusivity. The path Grok has taken to relevance may not be pretty, but it undeniably reflects the current zeitgeist of AI development and its growing influence on daily life.
