Early Planting Key to Improving Oilseed Yield and Quality, INTA Finds

The National Institute of Technology of the Agro-Industrial Complex (INTA) has conducted a comprehensive study on the quality of grain in three strategically important oilseed crops for Argentina's agroindustry: soybeans, flax, and rapeseed. The research, led by Maricel Gallardo of INTA Paraná's Cereals and Oilseeds Quality Laboratory, aims to provide critical insights that will support both the food industry and energy production. By analyzing the composition of grains, the study seeks to optimize the efficiency of use in agri-food chains and guide strategies for genetic improvement and agronomic management.

In the case of soybeans, the research team, in collaboration with INTA Rural Extension Agencies in Entre Ríos and with the participation of Diego Santos, conducted a survey between 2021 and 2024 to assess protein, oil, phosphorus, and amino acid content in grain samples collected across different departments of the province. The results revealed an average protein concentration of 35.3% and an average oil concentration of 23%, with variations observed among years and locations. Gallardo emphasized that soybean is a key crop in Argentina, and understanding its quality at the regional level allows for the identification of environments with greater potential for different industrial and nutritional uses. This information will enable more precise planning and selection of the most suitable grains for each destination, whether food or energy.

The study also examined amino acid and phosphorus profiles, both of which are essential for animal nutrition. Notably, lysine levels exceeded the national average, reaching 6.8% in 2021 and 5.8% in 2022. The Diamante and Paraná regions stood out for their higher lysine content, while Villa Gobernador Gálvez showed a lower concentration. These findings highlight the importance of regional differences in grain quality and the potential for optimizing crop management practices to enhance yield and quality.

The research is part of the Quality Network coordinated by Cecilia Accoroni, which broadens the reach and applicability of large-scale results. By focusing on regional variations and high-value environments, the study provides a foundation for genetic improvement, crop management, and cultivar selection. These improvements will boost Argentina's biofuel potential, enhance the efficiency of animal nutrition, and contribute to the sustainability of the country's agri-food chains.

In addition to soybeans, the study also evaluated flax and rapeseed, two other oilseed crops with significant potential for the national agroindustry. The analysis of their protein, oil, amino acid, and phosphorus content will help guide farmers and agronomists in optimizing cultivation practices to maximize yield and quality. This, in turn, will support the development of a more resilient and competitive agri-food sector in Argentina.

The findings from INTA Paraná's research underscore the importance of early planting in improving oilseed yield and quality. By understanding the regional variations in grain composition and identifying high-value environments, the study provides valuable information for farmers, agronomists, and industry stakeholders. This knowledge will enable them to make informed decisions about crop management, genetic improvement, and cultivar selection, ultimately contributing to the long-term sustainability and growth of Argentina's agri-food sector.

In conclusion, INTA Paraná's comprehensive study on the quality of grain in soybeans, flax, and rapeseed offers a wealth of information that will guide the strategic development of Argentina's oilseed crops. By focusing on protein, oil, amino acids, and phosphorus content, the research highlights the potential for enhancing yield and quality through early planting and optimized cultivation practices. These improvements will not only benefit the food and energy industries but will also contribute to the sustainability of Argentina's agri-food chains, ensuring a more resilient and competitive sector in the years to come.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also
