Dozens of firms risk losing B Corp status after standards overhaul

Tougher ethical certification process requires companies to meet standards in every one out of seven categories Dozens of companies may be at risk of losing their coveted B Corp ethical status after the organisation behind the corporate kite-marking system raised the standards required to qualify. B Lab, which oversees B Corp certification, launched the biggest overhaul in its 19-year history earlier this month, scrapping a system under which companies must gather enough points across multiple categories to qualify. Dozens of firms risk losing B Corp status after standards overhaul

The B Corp certification, a highly sought-after ethical badge for businesses, is undergoing a significant transformation. The organization behind the certification, B Lab, has recently introduced the most substantial overhaul in its 19-year history, raising the bar for companies seeking to maintain their coveted status. This change could leave many businesses at risk of losing their B Corp designation, as the new requirements demand that companies meet standards in every one of seven categories.

Previously, the certification process allowed companies to accumulate points across multiple categories, with a minimum threshold needed to qualify. However, B Lab has abandoned this system in favor of a more rigorous approach. Under the new framework, businesses must demonstrate excellence in all seven categories: social, environmental, economic, governance, workplace, community, and innovation. This shift means that companies will no longer be able to focus solely on a few areas to meet the certification criteria. Instead, they will need to ensure that their operations align with high ethical standards across the board.

The decision to overhaul the B Corp certification process was driven by a desire to strengthen the credibility and impact of the certification. B Lab has recognized that the previous system may have allowed some companies to prioritize certain categories while neglecting others. The new approach aims to ensure that businesses adhering to the B Corp standards are genuinely committed to ethical practices across all aspects of their operations.

The potential consequences of this overhaul are significant. Many companies that currently hold B Corp status may find that they are unable to meet the new requirements in all seven categories. This could result in a wave of businesses losing their certification, which might impact their reputation, customer loyalty, and investor confidence. For some companies, the challenge of meeting the new standards could even lead to restructuring or rethinking their core business strategies.

Despite the potential challenges, the B Corp certification remains a powerful tool for businesses looking to demonstrate their commitment to ethical practices. The overhaul represents a clear commitment to upholding high standards and ensuring that the certification remains a genuine reflection of a company's ethical prowess. For businesses that are willing to invest in meeting the new criteria, the B Corp designation could continue to serve as a valuable asset in their marketing and branding efforts.

In the coming months, it will be interesting to see how many companies are able to adapt to the new standards and retain their B Corp status. This overhaul could also prompt a broader discussion about the role of ethical certifications in the business world and the importance of holding companies accountable for their actions. As more consumers and investors prioritize sustainability and ethical practices, the B Corp certification and similar initiatives may become even more critical in shaping the future of responsible business.

In conclusion, the recent overhaul of the B Corp certification process by B Lab marks a significant shift in the way businesses are held to ethical standards. The new requirements, which demand excellence in all seven categories, could result in numerous companies losing their coveted designation. While this change poses challenges for some, it also underscores the importance of ethical practices in business and the need for certifications to evolve to reflect this growing demand. As businesses navigate this new landscape, the B Corp certification will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of ethical enterprise.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

Context Engineering for Coding Agents
The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit. Powerful context engineering is becoming a huge part of the developer experience of these tools. Birgitta Böckeler explains the current state of context configuration features, using Claude Code as an example. moreтАж

Does feeding less protein to cows over a longer period not only reduce nitrogen losses, but also affect methane emissions?
