The goal is to provide a productive environment for researchers to develop their research agendas from the perspective of their core fields and create deeper synergies and linkages between the research groups, given the systemic nature of these challenges. The group is formed by existing members of CEPR as well as new members who expand our knowledge and expertise on core climate and environmental areas. Among other topics, we will address: Economic effects of environmental and climate impacts and policies on firms and households Inequality implications of environmental and climate impacts and policies within and across countries Economic assessment of the costs and benefits of mitigation and decarbonisation efforts Adaptation to extreme weather events and other climate impacts Adaptation and public health management of pollution Risks and insurance with a growing climate uncertainty Innovation and R&D policies surrounding environmental and climate policies International cooperation for mitigation and adaptation Quantifying the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss and its environmental impacts The political economy of environmental and climate policies Market design for energy, climate and environmental policies Finance focused on sustainability and decarbonisation CLIMATE CHANGE Event Series Virtual Seminar on Climate Economics

Climate Change and the Environment: A Collaborative Effort to Address Critical Challenges
The Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) has established a Climate Change and the Environment programme, designed to unite a diverse group of economists focused on pressing issues related to energy, climate change, biodiversity, air and water pollution, and other critical environmental and natural resource issues. This initiative aims to create a productive environment for researchers to develop their research agendas from the perspective of their core fields, fostering deeper synergies and linkages between the research groups. The programme is composed of existing CEPR members alongside new members, expanding the organization's knowledge and expertise in core climate and environmental areas.
The CEPR Climate Change and the Environment programme addresses a wide range of topics, including the economic effects of environmental and climate impacts and policies on firms and households. Researchers will explore how these impacts and policies influence inequality both within and across countries. Additionally, the programme will assess the costs and benefits of mitigation and decarbonisation efforts, examining the economic implications of transitioning to sustainable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Another key focus of the programme is adaptation to extreme weather events and other climate impacts. Researchers will investigate how societies can better prepare for and respond to these challenges, ensuring resilience and minimizing damage. The programme also delves into adaptation and public health management of pollution, addressing the health risks associated with air and water pollution and exploring effective strategies to mitigate these risks.
The growing uncertainty surrounding climate risks and insurance will be examined, as will innovation and R&D policies surrounding environmental and climate policies. The programme will assess how these policies can drive technological advancements and foster sustainable practices. Furthermore, international cooperation for mitigation and adaptation will be a focal point, exploring the challenges and opportunities in global efforts to address climate change.
Biodiversity loss and its environmental impacts will be quantified, with researchers seeking to understand the causes and consequences of this loss. The political economy of environmental and climate policies will be analyzed, examining the interplay between policy decisions and economic factors. Market design for energy, climate, and environmental policies will be studied, with a focus on creating efficient and effective market mechanisms to address environmental challenges.
Finally, the programme will explore finance focused on sustainability and decarbonisation, investigating how financial systems can support the transition to a low-carbon economy. This includes examining investment patterns, financing mechanisms, and the role of financial institutions in driving sustainable development.
To further promote knowledge and collaboration, the CEPR Climate Change and the Environment programme hosts a CLIMATE CHANGE Event Series, featuring a Virtual Seminar on Climate Economics. This series brings together experts and researchers to discuss the latest findings and developments in the field, fostering a dynamic and collaborative environment for addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation.
The CEPR Climate Change and the Environment programme represents a significant effort to integrate economic analysis with environmental stewardship, ensuring that policies are informed by robust research and data. By bringing together experts from various disciplines, the programme aims to create a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected issues facing our planet, ultimately contributing to more effective and sustainable solutions for the future.
