CIMMYT and Uzbekistan Strengthen Partnership to Advance Climate-Resilient Wheat Systems

The Government of Uzbekistan and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) have recently signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to strengthen their partnership in advancing the wheat sector, with a focus on boosting productivity, enhancing resilience to climate change, and supporting national food security priorities. This agreement reflects a shared commitment to leveraging science-based solutions and building institutional capacity to address the evolving challenges faced by agricultural production in the region.

The signing of the LoI follows a high-level visit by a Government of Uzbekistan delegation to CIMMYTтАЩs headquarters in Texcoco, Mexico. During their visit, the delegation met with CIMMYTтАЩs senior leadership, scientists, and technical teams across key research platforms. The visit provided an opportunity for the Uzbekistan delegation to gain a deeper understanding of CIMMYTтАЩs advanced genomic capabilities and its global wheat diversity collections, which form the foundation for developing climate-resilient crop varieties.

A highlight of the delegationтАЩs visit was a tour of the Wellhausen-Anderson Genetic Resources Center and the Carlos Slim-Hel├║ Bioscience Research Complex. These facilities showcase CIMMYTтАЩs cutting-edge research capabilities, including its work on genomic selection and marker-assisted breeding, which are critical for accelerating the development of high-yielding, climate-resilient wheat varieties. The delegation also witnessed firsthand how CIMMYTтАЩs research translates into real agricultural outcomes, including through the organizationтАЩs longstanding partnerships with Mexican farmer associations. These partnerships demonstrate how science-based innovation can be effectively scaled to benefit farming communities and improve food security.

Sharon Burke, Chief Engagement Officer of CIMMYT, emphasized the significance of this partnership in a statement, saying, тАЬThis collaboration marks an important step for CIMMYT to work alongside the Government of Uzbekistan in advancing agricultural development in a region central to global food systems. It is about building a lasting partnership rooted in innovative science and a shared commitment to food security. Drawing on our long-standing experience, including in developing drought-tolerant varieties, CIMMYT is well positioned to support Uzbekistan in addressing its agricultural priorities while ensuring farmers have access to the latest innovations to enhance productivity and resilience.тАЭ

Uzbekistan, with its strategic location in Central Asia, plays a crucial role in global food systems, particularly in wheat production. The LoI between CIMMYT and the Uzbekistan government aims to strengthen collaboration on wheat sector development, focusing on modernization and food security. By leveraging CIMMYTтАЩs expertise in climate-resilient crop development, the partnership seeks to enhance the wheat sectorтАЩs productivity and ensure its sustainability in the face of changing climate conditions.

This agreement also marks a significant step in advancing CIMMYTтАЩs engagement in Central Asia through closer collaboration with national partners and institutions. By working together, CIMMYT and the Government of Uzbekistan can address the regionтАЩs agricultural challenges more effectively, ensuring that farmers have access to the latest scientific knowledge and tools to improve their productivity and resilience.

In the context of global efforts to improve agricultural systems and address food security, the partnership between CIMMYT and Uzbekistan highlights the importance of science-based solutions and international cooperation. By combining expertise in plant breeding, genomic research, and agricultural extension, the collaboration aims to deliver tangible benefits to farmers and contribute to the regionтАЩs food security goals.

Looking ahead, the LoI between CIMMYT and the Government of Uzbekistan represents a promising opportunity to advance wheat sector modernization and ensure food security in a region of global significance. Through this partnership, both parties are committed to building a more resilient and productive agricultural sector that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change and meet the evolving needs of the population.

Spring grazing: Risk of negative energy balance
Unsettled weather means spring grazing is still quite messy, but its important to push on as the risk of negative energy balances (NEB) rise. NEB is often an issue at this stage, as much of the herd begins to reach their peak milk production but have not yet reached their maximum dry matter intake (DMI).
