China has unveiled the world's largest outdoor escalator, a stunning architectural marvel that stretches over half a mile and seems to rise indefinitely into the sky. Located in the mountainous city of Wushan within Chongqing municipality, this extraordinary structure is known as the "Goddess" escalator, named for its heavenly ascent. The escalator cuts through the heart of the city, starting at the base of a steep incline and continuing upward, almost touching the clouds.
The Goddess escalator, which spans 905 meters, is not a single unbroken chain of platforms but consists of approximately two dozen individual escalators and lifts, all interconnected as a single system. The escalating stairways were manufactured by the Swiss company Schindler in a factory in Shanghai's northern region. Schindler's Chinese division has already supplied around 1,400 escalators to the Chongqing metro system, showcasing their expertise in creating innovative transportation solutions.
This monumental escalator has been described as the first of its kind in the world, with no comparable projects either under construction or already completed, according to Huang Wei, the head of the design team for the project and an engineer at China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group. The escalator's journey from bottom to top takes nearly 21 minutes, offering a breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings.
The Goddess escalator has already become a popular attraction in Wushan, with around 9,000 people using it daily. Users pay approximately $0.43 for every hour of travel in one direction. During the recent Spring Festival, the escalator attracted 450,000 visitors, highlighting its appeal and significance as a tourist destination.
The escalator's construction was driven by the need to address the city's challenging topography and provide an efficient means of transportation for its residents. Wushan is already home to the iconic Crown escalator, built in the 1990s, which has become a symbol of the city. The Goddess escalator now joins it, further enhancing Wushan's reputation as a city that embraces innovative and awe-inspiring architectural designs.
As the world's largest outdoor escalator, the Goddess structure not only serves as a functional transport link but also as a testament to human ingenuity and the possibilities of modern engineering. Its sheer scale and breathtaking design have captured the imagination of people around the globe, making it a must-see marvel in China's rapidly evolving urban landscape.
