Asian premiere of ‘Amílcar’ at HKIFF: a poetic documentary on Guinea-Bissau-born revolutionary Amílcar Cabral

The Asian premiere of “Amílcar,” a poetic documentary on the life and legacy of Guinea-Bissau-born revolutionary Amílcar Cabral, is taking place at the 2026 Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF). This event marks a significant moment for film enthusiasts and history buffs alike, as the film offers a unique perspective on Cabral’s contributions to the anti-colonial movement in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.

Amílcar Cabral, an agronomist, poet, and revolutionary, is best known for his leadership in the struggle against Portuguese colonial rule. Born in 1921 in Bafatá, Guinea-Bissau, Cabral became a pivotal figure in the fight for independence, not only for his country but also for the broader African continent. His vision for a just and dignified society resonates deeply with audiences today, as the film captures his ideas and philosophy through a blend of archival footage and 16mm imagery.

“Amílcar” is a documentary essay that tells the story of Cabral’s life through his own words. By utilizing his speeches, writings, and personal reflections, the film provides a direct insight into the mind of this influential revolutionary. This approach not only humanizes Cabral but also allows viewers to engage with his ideas on justice, freedom, and self-determination. The use of 16mm film adds a layer of artistic depth, creating a visual narrative that complements the documentary’s thematic exploration of Cabral’s legacy.

The Asian premiere of “Amílcar” at HKIFF is a rare opportunity for audiences in Asia to witness this compelling film. The documentary’s blend of historical context and poetic storytelling offers a fresh perspective on a figure who has been instrumental in shaping the political landscape of West Africa. Cabral’s ideas on the importance of education, unity, and the empowerment of marginalized communities continue to inspire movements for social justice and equality worldwide.

The film’s screening at HKIFF is scheduled for two dates: Sunday, April 5, at 5:15 PM at the Louis Koo Cinema at the Hong Kong Arts Centre (AC), and Tuesday, April 7, at 2:30 PM at the Emperor Cinemas Times Square (TS). These screenings provide a platform for filmgoers to delve into the life of Amílcar Cabral and appreciate the enduring relevance of his message.

In addition to showcasing “Amílcar,” the Hong Kong International Film Festival is a platform for diverse cinematic experiences. This year’s edition features a wide array of films from around the world, highlighting the best in independent and international cinema. The festival’s inclusion of “Amílcar” underscores its commitment to presenting thought-provoking documentaries that challenge viewers to reflect on history and the present.

The Asian premiere of “Amílcar” at HKIFF is not only a celebration of Cabral’s life but also a tribute to the power of storytelling in preserving and promoting historical narratives. By blending archival footage with poetic storytelling, the film offers a unique and engaging exploration of a revolutionary whose ideas continue to inspire. For those interested in history, politics, or simply a compelling documentary, “Amílcar” is a must-see at this year’s Hong Kong International Film Festival.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they don’t want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didn’t notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didn’t know why they’d just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place. Doors A while back, I was at Black Seed Bagel, which has a door that looks 75% like a “push” door from both sides when it’s actually a push door from the outside and
