As World Cup kick-off nears, a reminder of the power of sport to build bridges and break barriers

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown begins, the event’s significance extends far beyond the pitch. Just a few miles from the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey is set to host the final match of the tournament. This location serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that sport can have on the world, as it bridges divides and fosters unity.

On Wednesday, at the UN, a gathering of elite athletes and sports administrators highlighted the transformative power of football and other international sports. The event underscored how sport can transcend borders, promote peace, and inspire change. Participants shared stories of how football has been a catalyst for social progress, offering hope and opportunity to communities around the globe.

One of the key themes that emerged was the role of sport in breaking down barriers. Football, in particular, has been instrumental in uniting people from diverse backgrounds. The sport’s global reach allows it to transcend political and cultural divides, creating a shared language that transcends language itself. This unity is not just confined to the field but extends to the broader society, as fans from different nations come together to celebrate the game.

Moreover, the event emphasized the importance of using sport as a tool for development. By investing in sports infrastructure and programs, countries can create opportunities for young people, particularly in underprivileged areas. Sports can provide a platform for marginalized communities to shine, offering them a pathway to success and empowerment. The stories of athletes who have risen from humble beginnings to global stardom serve as powerful motivators for others, inspiring them to pursue their dreams.

The power of sport to build bridges was also evident in the discussions about its role in conflict resolution. Sport has the unique ability to foster goodwill and understanding between nations. By hosting international events, countries can showcase their cultures and values, paving the way for dialogue and cooperation. The 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is a prime example of this. The tournament will bring together teams and fans from across North America, showcasing the region’s diversity and unity.

In addition to its cultural and social benefits, sport has been recognized for its potential to drive economic growth. Major tournaments like the World Cup can stimulate local economies, create jobs, and enhance infrastructure. However, the focus should not solely be on economic gains. Instead, it is crucial to ensure that the benefits of such events are equitably distributed, particularly to communities that host the tournaments.

The gathering at the UN also touched on the importance of inclusivity in sports. Efforts to increase participation from women and underrepresented groups are vital in creating a more inclusive and diverse sporting landscape. By breaking down gender and racial barriers, sports can promote equality and challenge prejudices. The inclusion of women’s football in the World Cup and other major tournaments is a significant step in this direction.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the potential of sport to change the world. It is a testament to the idea that through unity, development, and inclusivity, sport can build bridges and break barriers, fostering a more connected and compassionate global community. The MetLife Stadium, nestled near the UN, is not just a venue for a grand sporting event but a symbol of the enduring power of sport to inspire change and unity in an increasingly complex world.

Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3
Clojure 1.11.3 is now available. CLJ-2843 - Reflective calls to Java methods that take primitive long or double now work when passed a narrower boxed number at runtime (Integer, Short, Byte, Float). Previously, these methods were not matched during reflection and an error was thrown. Java 21 added an overload to the method Thread/sleep in the 1-arity. When upgrading to Java 21, existing Clojure calls to Thread/sleep become reflective, but continue to work. As usual, you can detect reflection with *warn-on-reflection* and address with a type hint (here, ^long ) to choose the desired overload. Previously, passing a Short or Integer value to a reflective call like Thread/sleep that takes a long would not match, that has been corrected.
